Man, what an anthem.

Anyone knows if the album's title a reference to the cult or not?

I've always found the lyrics and concept of this record to be about a cult. So I'd imagine yes.

"That song [sex, god, sex], and a lot of Children Of God, was inspired by — and I mean inspired, it was not a cynical or ironic comment upon — the televangelist Jimmy Swaggart."

We are the children of god.

There are those well respected albums you refrain from criticising too harshly, this piece of trash is not one of those albums. Seriously, what is this? No less annoying than Filth, in fact maybe worse because of the complete lack of direction.
Here’s where someone tells me about the ‘theme’ & why it makes sense, I’m sure the album has a theme that ties everything together, but it’ll still sound like hot garbage.

I’m just frustrated this doesn’t make sense to me, why would anyone enjoy this?

I like this because Michael Gira is the man that saved my soul from hell.

Trust Me is genuinely disconcerting, they get a ‘bonus point’ (not an actual 1.0 pt) for that one.
|
| |
You can't enjoy this because you're a demon and Michael Gira hates demons; go back to hell, demon.

Where are their post-rock albums... Soundtracks? The latest ones?
|
| |
The post-rock and post-punk stuff after The Burning World and before To Be Kind is the best of Swans (except for that little thing called "My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky"). The Seer is their peak. SftB isn't a soundtrack for a film, but it has the "structure" of a soundtrack.

They have far too many albums but I’m making an exception & despite the poor start, the potential variety coupled with their reputation intrigues me enough to warrant further exploration.

Yeah this is easily my least favorite of their high rated stuff. Super overrated, but maybe I just don't get it.

If you want something that actually sounds good, try White Light. If you want post-rock/drone/repetition, try The Seer or Soundtracks
