I saw your ratings of their other albums & was waiting for you to come around Greg.
"Post Orgasmic Chill was basically an excercise in consistency for me"
I disagree... The 1st half of that album was all over the place. It sometimes worked (Tracy's Flaw into Skank Heads) and sometimes didn't... But consistent & cohesive it was not imo.
"improvement on ballads also seems quite questionable since their first record contains some of their best"
I actually preferred the ballads on 2nd LP 'Stoosh'. Is this an improvement? Maybe not. But they're still really good, as can be seen by highlight #2 & probably the 5th & 6th best songs here as well.
Thanks gyro. Thanks STOPSHOUTING! You're just scared of her.

"Holy hell. I had no idea this existed. Nothing they've done since has matched Paranoid & Sunburnt for me, but this is definitely worth a listen, I'm sure. Good review."
Ditto. Until Deviant told me a couple of weeks back. And I agree... i still think their debut is their best...

Nicely done. I can't say I'll be getting this but given what I understand from the rather thorough review, but I'm pleased they conquered the inconsistency from albums 2+3. I enjoyed the video to 'Cold Ugly Boy' which was more post-punk than the older more metal rockers, which is good as it sounds like this may help the album from losing shape, which is always an admirable goal.

Without listening to the album AnvilJ, you've actually said some spot on things. While there is a sort of poppy sense to the album, it could also be referred to as Indie or (as you state) post-punk. And the line about the album not losing it's shape is exactly what I meant.

More pop than rock, more disappointed than excitement. Comparing to the former album, the new one sounds like Skin lost her balls and grew braids. Now she can sing "Weak" with a new meaning.

I am sure you won't be the only one thinking this TheKleszcz. But I think this album also deserves to be judged on its own. Plus, Skin is a woman you know. ;-)

Thanks for waiting ;) The only thing I agree is what you said about the ballads on Stoosh. Post Orgasmic Chill is a beast of an album that definitely contains their strongest songwriting to date. Come on. Charlie Big Potato and Secretly are some of the best songs of the 1990s. As for the other comments, this release is indeed very poppy and mainstream. I'm really disappointed I must say.

Charlie Big Potato & Secretly are great, but not "some of the best songs of the 1990s" and I wouldn't even put them in the band's top 5 songs. And I think there is a lot of filler on that album. What was that song about "On the hotel tv"? Ugh.
This is more mainstreamy, but I don't think it's gonna be all over the radio or anything like that. I mean, "I Can Dream' was mainstreamy... It's also their best song imo.

Weak and Hedonism are probably my fave SA songs

I like both of those songs, but even they would not be in my top 5. I guess this is another band where fave songs is gonna differ greatly from one person to the next.

I think it's time I give this band a listen. Too many years ignoring them. Great review.

I Can Dream is good but not great. Weak and Hedonism are awesome though.

Thanks yetanotherprofile. I hope they don't let you down. Actually for those that want a taster, I forgot that they do have a 'Greatest Hits' package.
Blasphemous Greg. 'I Can Dream' is in my top 20 or 30 songs ever!

Picked this up last night and have given it 3 spins so far. Really strong album although I was surprised at exactly how "tame" the music is. Better than faking aggression and whatnot for the sake of it, I suppose. Regardless of the style, I do think most songs are very well written. I may already consider "Talk Too Much" to be one of their top 3 ballads. Only disagreed with the review in a few places. Namely, "The Sweetest Thing" being where things became too poppy. It's just got this excellent funky groove throughout and I just find it very melodic and upbeat rather than outright pop. For me, "You Can't Always Do What You Like" is what crossed the line by a few hundred miles.

I was gonna rec this to you jeff, but couldn't recall if you followed their earlier stuff.
Good comments & opinion Aso T. I'm glad they didn't fake aggression either... It is 11 years since their last album & they've obviously all changed. 'Talk Too Much' is indeed a great song... It actually didn't stick out to me at first, but is the real grower of the LP.
On 'The Sweetest Thing', I should have clarified that I actually don't mind it as a song... It wouldn't surprise me if it's released as a single. But I just think it's a little too poppy for them. 'You Can't Always Do...' can get away with it imo because it more classifies as a ballad.

ive never heard anything else by them. if i like this album i will look into their other material

No, man. It's the worst disc to start imo. Try Post Orgasmic Chill and Paranoid and Sunburnt first.
They're both 4.5 in my book.
