Yeah none of those are his best songs other than maybe 'Needle in the Hay' - in fact I'd go as far as to say 'overall atmosphere' is the winning ingredient on the first two rather that 'stop you dead songs'
I do love 'Alphabet Town' though.
I'd say 6 or 7 songs from Either/Or would make his top 20, maybe 4 or 5 from XO - doesn't leave a hell of a lot of space for anything from the first two. In fact 'Basement' also has 3 of my Smith favourites that'd make a top 20 too. 'Figure 8' is a bit light on heavy hitters I'll admit.

I actually haven't even listened to much of Figure 8, despite my name lol. This, s/t, and Either/Or are all pretty much tied, with E/O holding a very special place in my heart. XO has been growing on me more and more is entering that "pretty much all tied up" echelon.

the way the verses of "last call" seamlessly and soooo intensely flow into the "chorus" (where it's the like ABAC chord progression [as in the poetry sense, not as in what literal chords he uses, I'm not at my piano]) is amazing, nearly overwhelming
