Nostalgia.

I see the album as having awesome singles at the start, cool songs in the middle and fantastic tracks at the end. I don't think it's fair to dismiss the singles as the album would be much worse off without them. Not just in terms of the songs themselves, but the pacing and overall dynamic of the album.
