I'd highly recommend veering away from other prog (esp symphonic shit like Yes) and checking some of the prog-leaning jazz fusion bands from this era if you want Mirage-esque stuff. Return to Forever, Brand X, Mahavishnu Orchestra especially. Not quite the same, but closer than you're likely to get from Camel's more direct contemporaries

Thanks. Indeed, could never get into Yes, they are definitely not as cool as this.

Wild take. Yes has some undeniably (and non-symphonic) cool shit. Not saying identical to Camel by any means, but go listen to Siberian Khatru and tell me you don’t love that shit

The assessment of which band is "cooler" is highly subjective and depends on individual musical preferences. Both Yes and Camel are progressive rock bands that gained popularity in the 1970s and have dedicated fan bases.

Yes is known for their complex and symphonic sound, characterized by intricate compositions and virtuosic musicianship. Some of their notable albums include "Fragile," "Close to the Edge," and "Going for the One."

Camel, on the other hand, is recognized for their melodic and atmospheric approach to progressive rock, often incorporating elements of jazz and folk. Albums like "Mirage," "The Snow Goose," and "Moonmadness" showcase their unique sound.

Ultimately, the "cooler" band is a matter of personal taste. If you enjoy intricate, progressive compositions, you might lean towards Yes. If you prefer a more melodic and atmospheric sound, you might find Camel to be cooler. It's worth exploring both bands' discographies to see which one resonates more with your musical preferences.

But obviously it is agreed that melody and atmosphere is cooler than intricate progressiveness.

Both bands are subjectively cool as fuck. Problem solved. But also worth noting that Close to the Edge has some expansive melodic/atmospheric sections as well. In fact, isn’t that mostly what Tales from Topographic Oceans is? Have only listened to that one a couple times but I remember it being slower and really atmospheric

I think Camel would appeal to me more now for the reasons cited above tbh. I DO like Yes, but I imagine my formerly very impressed self may be slightly less taken aback by the musicianship... because vibes > etc.

Of course there's always 'why not both?'

Let's be clear. Despite both are two prog bands, they're two different bands in terms of style, despite both are usually linked with the same sub-genre of prog, the symphonic prog style. But, this is what I most love in prog. We can see so such different bands in terms of music in the same style, the prog style.

So, in my case, I can love the music of Camel and Yes at the same level.

Why not? Both are symphonic prog but they play that style in a different way. The same happens, for instance, with Genesis, Camel, Yes, Emerson, Lake And Palmer, Focus, Kansas and Renaissance, in the 70's, or Anglagard, Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, Kaipa, Wobbler, Discipline and Transatlantic, in our days, only to mention a very few of them.
