Great debut by Camel, but they hadn't developed their own personality here. The tracks are a bit unfocused and because of that they got lumped in as another 'Canterbury' band.
Opener 'Slow Yourself Down' starts off a bit weak with the vocals. Camel have never be known for strong vocals or lyrics, but luckily they don't last long on this song. The song picks up after the 2 minute mark, breaking into a camel jam, with a killer guitar solo and fantastic organ performance by Bardens.
What follows is the famous and mellow 'Mystic Queen' which has some great guitar work by Andy Latimer. Ferguson's vocal performance is short but solid enough.
Next 3 tracks are all very good. 'Six Ate' has Camel at their jazziest and jammiest! 'Separation' has a wicked guitar solo, nice chord progressions, and awesome drumming. 'Never Let Go' would be a live staple of the band for years to come.
Curiosity is the weakest track on the album, mainly due to the vocals. Ferguson did fine on Mystic Queen, but here they are truly bad and out of place. Thankfully the song recovers in the middle.
The album closer has some cool bluesy riffing, but it's no 'Lady Fantasy' suite or 'Lunar Sea.'
Overall, there isn't a bad song on this album, but really the only one that could be called a classic is 'Never Let Go.' With only 2 tracks as instrumentals, this is Camel's most vocal-dominated record. I think after the albums release, they realized vocals were not their strong suit and that it was better to focus on the music.
Camel is a pleasant enough listen, but the next album is where the band really shines.

has some great songs (mystic queen, never let go, arubaluba) but the rest are not that gripping, imo. maybe it's the songwriting. i find most of the themes, riffs and melodies to not be as well-written as on the next three albums and the playing not as refined. dunno, maybe I'm just too used to the later albums ;)

Slow Yourself Down is one of the most "welcoming" openers ever imo.
