Review Summary: Enrique's heart, it hurts...

Nineteen. Such a strange age, your body has pretty much changed as much as it's going to, you're out of high school. You may even think you're in love. But it all changed when you walked in on your girlfriend fucking your best friend. You don't know what to do. She pushes him away and starts apologizing, but you just kind of look at her and him, then just walk out. For the next few days nothing occurs, she calls you over and over but you want nothing to do with her. You get up, shower, go to work, eat, rinse and repeat for about 2 weeks. You've become an emotionless husk of your former self. Until one day, your friend stops over, you were never close to him but he was always there to back you up. He expresses his concern about how you need to let some emotion out if you ever want to get past this. You just shrug and say “I don't really feel anything man..” He gives you a worried look and says “Here, listen to this, it might make you feel better...” You look at the odd album cover Converge – Jane Doe You murmur thanks before shutting the door. But before it closes all the way he says “Dude, don't give up after one listen.” You say whatever as you walk back to your room. You just lay in your bed for about an hour before looking at the CD again. You think it can't hurt to listen. So you slip it in your CD player and wait to see what's next....

When “Concubine” opens, you immediately get hit by a thrashing guitar and tortured screams. You shut it off before even making it a minute. Thinking “what the hell did I just listen to?!?!” The first time you listened to Deftones had nothing on this. Did he really think this would make you feel better? You go downstairs and get a beverage. Your mom asks if everything is alright, how are you holding up. You just shrug and head back upstairs. After staring at the ceiling for about 20 minutes pondering the last few weeks of happiness you had, wondering what went wrong, you glance back at your CD player. Something about the CD beckons you back in. Your friend had always been right it seems when it comes to these things, so you press play again and begin the assault once more. While it still pains the ears a little, you can't deny how tight the band sounds. This is the most technical album you've ever heard, and you're only two songs in. The singers screams sound so tortured and so loud that they even start to hurt your throat. You start to feel his pain. You have no idea what he is saying, for all you know this album has no lyrics and he is just screaming along to the music. But something tells you there is meaning to it, you feel it in your heart. For the first time in almost 3 weeks, you actually start to feel again. You still have yet to fully take it all in, but you actually start to get really angry. You want to go find your ex-best friend and go kick his ass. But you don't. You just sit and listen to the singer frantically scream.

By “Hell To Pay”, you can't take it anymore. The chugging bass and Bannon's murmuring, which builds up to the loud chorus and haunting screams cause a burst of rage from you, causing you to punch a hole right through your wall. Your mom screams “WHAT WAS THAT?!” But you don't hear her. You have the music much too loud. You can barely hear yourself think, but that doesn't matter. The only thing you care about right now is finishing this album. You feel so frustrated... so sick inside, you don't know whether to freak the fuck out or just sit back... During “The Broken Vow” you manage to make out a single lyric I'll take my love to the grave.. You can't take it anymore. You burst into tears over everything that has happened. You loved her so much, and now it is finally all coming out. When “Bitter and Then Some” comes on, it may sound cliché, but you start to feel so bitter about the situation. All the time you put into her. All the fun you guys used to have, all the presents you had bought her. All for it to be gone in a few seconds. How could that cunt cheat on you? You gave her everything, you thought you'd be together forever. You start to hate yourself for all the time you wasted. You pace frantically, get up and scream “WHY?!” so loud your mom runs up to see if everything is okay. You look at her with a tear filled gaze of more rage and sorrow then ever she had seen. She knew you needed to be alone and left you to your thoughts...

By "Phoenix In Flames" you've started to calm down. Even with the eclectic music and vocals going on you have lost your steam. It's been replaced by sorrow and mourning. You can't deny you miss her. Even after everything you've said and though about the whole situation, you can't deny all the good times you spent together. But she doesn't deserve it, she doesn't deserve you. You gave her everything, And she turns around and cheats on you. It's going to be hard. But you've got to let her go. With the ten minute epic of an album finisher “Jane Doe” you can't help but feel relieved. Even if you still have feelings for her. You've almost completely moved on. Even though you put everything you could into that relationship, if she could pull that shit obviously it didn't matter. You've moved on and you're not going back. Your friend actually came back over later that day, when you opened the door you just looked at him, smiled and gave him a big hug. He just laughed and said “So it worked obviously....”
