Yeah, their sound has changed quite a bit over the 5 albums (even though both this and the most recent one can more or less be described as shoegazey post-punk). This is definitely a sort of "lightning in a bottle" album, Nobody... is pretty excellent too but nothing else they've done touches this. Even still this runs the risk of being a bit too homogeneous since a lot of the songs have a very similar formula, but it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Nobody is on my wishlist. I think this does suffer a bit for its homogeneity, and it is front-loaded.

I actually prefer the latter half to this - 9 songs is a juicy amount for consumption though

I agree with the frontloading, first two tracks are my favorites (though “And She Would Darken the Memory” is just as good), but it’s all great

Agreed, this might be a top 10 drum album for me. Thing is the drumming isn’t even super complex or anything, the drum sound like you say is just fucking massive, really sounds like you’re in the room with them. Whole album has an incredible atmosphere that they never approached again.

Yeah it's really shoegaze-y in it's approach - make it sound as big as possible. It really works in their favour. The album sounds so original and unmatchable because of it.

Whenever I hear a track like the closer, I know it's because the band know they have crafted a classic if you get me. It's a real full stop on the album as an experience.

For sure. I didn’t like the closer at first, though it was kinda boring and extraneous but I now agree it caps this off perfectly, a necessary comedown.

the review hits the nail on the head in regards to the lyrics - they're so perfectly open to intepretation but with sooo much emotion.

Having a listen to the extended edition, Untitled 4 God damn

How were there just more extraordinary tracks laying around somewhere from these sessions?
