tightrope's an awesome pop song yes, but to be honest it sometimes doesn't feel like it belongs here. It's like an awesome song interrupting an awesome album so we can admire it and then the album resumes

i feel like tightrope could have fit better if it had a first-person narrative like the rest, lol (then again, does that mean 'cold war' could use it, too?). the rest are songs about love (mostly) sung by a "character" we know; tightrope is just a jam.

that's exactly the reason that 'make the bus' is a weak link--it's not that much "weaker" than the rest of the songs (though i'd still say it's distinctly weaker--unlike tightrope, it's not tight enough a jam to overcome the problem i'm about to say) but because it feels like it breaks a sort of pseudo-narrative. 'come alive', 'wondaland', 'mushrooms and roses'; these all feel like theyre coming from the same 'world' whereas 'make the bus' is just a weird jam; would have been better as a bonus track for that reason (i.e. not quality but continuity).

that and the fact that 'make the bus' is way more kevin barnes than janelle monae so we're losing that sense of character and continuity even more
