I might listen to this again with that mindset, love when a guy can write songs but also knows how to play with macro structure or whatever. your description sort of reminds me of "dusk at cubist castle," although at least that album turns the psychedelic tide with the closer

“She’s like witch magic with all her exes she probably wears their blood in a vial around her neck”

That’s what my buddy said when I told him I was stooping to the level of checking out a Taylor Swift album lol. She is mildly terrifying, but not for the reasons her fans thinks she is... she’s the type to chop your balls off while you’re sleeping.

Yeah, even using the phrase “fails to match up to it” doesn’t feel quite right. Opening salvo’s definitely the most immediate and memorable songwriting, but the rest of the record’s not exactly trying to cover that territory anymore so much as disintegrate it, drifts back and forth between near ambiance and shattering noise (I Want to Be Cold, Samurai Sword)

And then revisits some of the opening motifs in My Warm Blood to close it off, but by this point alienated, like you’re hearing them drift in and out through water

is this bullshit the reason why stans call her the "dark queen"? give me a fucking break, taylor is the epitome of what people mean when they say "white people have no culture". she's fucking Dempsters. She's frozen vegetable mixed medley in the microwave. She's the type to crochet a fucking baby hat while you're sleeping.

idk man I’d be wary of my balls around her. Strong “psycho-ex gf” vibes.

And her fans think she’s a dark queen because of that incredibly corny zombie music vid for Look What You Made Me Do, and the black metal album cover for an album that is the polar opposite of black metal. Not that deep reasoning for not that deep people.

the only thing you'll wake up to is her whispering "did you leave the oven on?" in your ear

psycho ex-gf? she's the type to send you a handwritten note on mascara-tear stained parchment paper in the mail after you've broken up that says "i hate you 4000"

imagine cyndi lauper fans placing bomb threats to rolling stone or w/e in the 80s if they gave her a middling review

horse girls terrify me more than any other thing on this planet... it’s something in their eyes... something crucial is missing in the space behind.

Just remembered there’s a horror movie that came out this year called Horse Girl, I can’t be the only one that finds them disconcerting.. Horse Girls are a cult and Taylor is their Marshall Applewhite.

That’s a good explanation Robert, I can see how the guitar playing on the title track meshes with the drums rhythmically. That song never stood out to me much but I always like hearing people’s take on a song and then relistening. Should probably listen to this whole thing again but like Noler said, the weaker parts are just so boring

I love that analysis. Couldnt agree more.

"the weaker parts are just so boring"

I wouldn't say boring. Less eventful or immediate, sure, but not boring. To me it's the same reason why you'd sit through the quieter parts of Lift your skinny fists or F#A#; it's the context that makes the beautiful moments all the more beautiful.

Honestly I I’m kind of on the fence about even checking it because it looked like it might be a drone project or something and the title makes it seem low effort but seeing the genre tags and ratings on RYM is promising.
