hmm as much as i love this, the ratio of pretty good songs compared to the classics is probably too high to justify the 4.5 anymore

Literally only gripe I've got is that the noisy return in Samurai Sword after lulling the album into a drifty ethereality feels a little laborious and self-conscious in a not super flattering way. Breaks the atmo and stutters the momentum of the record a bit

But even then Samurai Sword is great, just the placement screams "yeah this was written by someone who was barely 20"

ngl any urge i felt to return to this as a whole has been brutally eradicated by mount eerie (album). the zany clutter here is rarely offensive, but hearing phil make something halfway cohesive out of it is proper *wave goodbye* treatment

cute coming-of-age opus but

dang ruthless

idk i already went thru the "this isn't as good as his other stuff" era phase and feel i came back to loving it. it's the perfect glossary for literally all of phil's work imo

“cute coming-of-age opus but”

The dismissiveness it hurts my heart

Mount eerie (album) never clicked with me like this. Is it too serious? This feels childish and playful and vivid in the best of ways. To me anyway. Probably some rose tinted spectacles playing a role, too.
