I'm glad I decided to give this more of a chance. This isn't the Dream Theater "fun" album per se, but I listen start to finish and enjoy it the whole way through, definitely one you have to pay close attention to to appreciate though.
While I agree with you, somehow I was more or less hooked from the start (the choruses in 6:00 and Caught in a Web come to mind). It wasn't like I liked it at first listen, more like, it seemed intruiging/interesting. The parts that actually required some work to appreciate were the middle and towards the end I think.
And also:
This isn't the Dream Theater "fun" album per se
It's funny cause it's moments like the previous stated (vocals in Innocence Faded) that make parts of this album "fun" ;) But yea, overall this has a more serious tone, which I like.

Some songs like 6:00, Erotomania, and Lie are more "fun" but yeah, the serious tone is part of what makes it so great.
The first 4 songs were the easiest to like. I thought Voices and Scarred dragged the first couple times I heard them, now they're among my favorites. The moment where the guitar solo comes in in Voices is just perfect.

Another good DT review. This is probably one of my favorite albums by them. This is when they started improving on their lyrics, too, because Images & Words had a tendancy to sound a little fruity.

Yeah, I think this album has their strongest lyrics.

The parts I had to adjust to compared to some of the other songs were The Mirror, although I always thought the intro was awesome (the bass literally goes "dundun dundundun" in about 2 mins. while the other parts change), and Lie. Both are basically one song that runs at over 13 minutes. And the third was Scarred at 11 minutes, which makes sense, since these make up roughly 1/3 of the album.
And yes, that solo is perfect. Nothing else to be said :-) Btw, what do you think of the section that follows?

At first I didn't like The Mirror and thought it was boring, I just found myself waiting for Lie. But now I find it to be almost like a 2-part song, The Mirror is sort of a build-up to it. Especially since it transitions into it perfectly, I didn't even realize the song had changed the first time I listened to it.
And Lie is by far my favorite song here.

I'd be hard pressed to choose a favorite here cos it's so consistent. But the following are what would qualify for my top 3:
Scarred
Lifting Shadows off a Dream
Voices
Runner-ups: The Mirror/Lie, Space-Dye Vest and Innocence Faded

1000'th comment right here. it deserves to be on this album.
"i thought you could control life, but its not like that, there are things you cant control"

"This is really different. Its my favorite album of theirs. The only one that is deserving of 5"
I'm completly agree with this. Only on this album Petrucci's soloes are blowing your mind! Just listen Voices guitar solo.....
