This pricey stuff makes me dizzy
I guess I've always been a delicate man
It takes me a day to remember a day
I didn't mean to let it get so far out of hand…

Saw these guys last night in Detroit. Was a bit worried that it'd be a bit of a stinker of a show considering it was a tour to promote their latest album. I think they played...six (?) songs from it, out of about 25 total. So the saturation really wasn't too bad, and they led off with four new ones in a row so it "got em outta the way," so to speak.
But honestly, the new songs didn't sound half bad live, and there was a surprising amount of energy from the band all night. Never seen them so vivacious and interactive before. 'Course it doesn't much change my opinion on the new album as it stands - those studio recordings are still mucho boring. BUT at least I have a some appreciation for them now, even if it's most likely very ephemeral.
Show kicked ass though, they really knocked it out. Nice encore, too, closing with a (mostly) acoustic Vanderlyle audience singalong.

*sigh* very thin on the boxer material, seeing them in september and i'm very much in two minds about it

Agreed, wouldn't have minded a few more BOXER cuts, esp. something like 'Brainy', 'Apartment Story', or 'Slow Show', but given my personal affinity for TWFM, I can't complain too much.

Really?
I mean I could come up with theoretically 'preferable' setlists for just about any band/show I've ever been to, but all things considered I thought this one was pretty good. Obviously you have to expect a chunk of songs from the new album since they're promoting it. I guess one can balk at the omission of many Boxer/Alligator tracks but bands drifting away from their earliest material aside from a few 'must-plays' isn't exactly uncommon. And given the relative strength of HV/TWFM (which seems to be the heaviest concentration) that's not really an issue in this case. At least not for me. I could see being very upset if you were a hardcore Boxer/Alligator fan and hated everything from HV onward. But then why are you even at a National show to begin with then? That's like going to a Radiohead show but oh the only albums I enjoy are The Bends and OK Computer. Sus.

i def prefer those two, but also just the songs they played from this and twfm are mostly ones i dont rly care about (i need my girl, england, humiliation, pink rabbits).

Fair enough; I always welcome England and Pink Rabbits myself, love Humiliation, too, and hadn't seen that one live yet so it was a treat. Agreed that I Need My Girl is the weakest track and TWFM and I could do without it, but I also don't despise it enough to really be bothersome.
Of everything I think the ones that translated best to the stage were The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness and Graceless. Ravishing performances on both. The souped up second-half of About Today was also quite nice.
I am a simple man, though. Easy to please.

i thought the segue from humilation to murder me rachel was one of the highlights when i caught them this tour... just kinda bleeds together in a way you wouldn't expect a band like them to attempt/pull off
