@nateman i think it was like that for me at first. But even though The National grew on me, i didnt love them until TWFM came out. That one unlocked GOAT status for their discography in my brain. I found SWB and the new single to be pretty immediate, so maybe once it really hits you its all immediate? Or it could be that theyre just more accessible now. Idk.

I have found all their albums to be absolute growers no matter how much I loved the previous ones. Nothing has been immediate

Every album they release (since Alligator) is less and less immediate, in the case of SWB I still haven't really gotten into it much at all.

lol I'm only just fully wrapping my mind around SWB and then I hear that they are releasing new material. At some point I see myself playing catch up. Maybe the fact that my job allows me very limited time for listening to music is a factor too though.

Have Boxer @5 gave this a good listen last night and I’m moving it to 5 also. Without a doubt some of their best work to now. Very consistent in my opinion every track is great.

Same. Definitely more interesting then what Sleep Well Beast offered up.

Irredeemable dreck, absolute toilet, hilariously bad.

Proud of them abandoning the formula and making a song that flat out misguided tbh

Those guest lead vox coming in is the musical face palm of the year so far.

Seriously a 0.5 out of 10 National tune for me, I'm astounded, listened to it about 20 times now lol

I pray, really pray, I find the whole album equally awful so I can put up a 0.5 review - that would be something else

Listened to it again now and Spotify put up 'I'll Still Destroy You' after - that's not as offensive but there's a similarity. I don't like that direction.

Bad Matt melodies, undercooked rhythmic glitch, over egged production

Fallen in love with the band again. This album remains a classic. Boxer is better than I remember first time round. I really do believe that the new one will deliver.

Never gotten into Alligator for whatever reason.

I've enjoyed every other album, though.
