runaway just drags on 2 minutes past its expiration date, it would be a really good song had they cut it three and a half minutes in a la start a war
the high points on this are untouchable within the national's catalogue, even if it isn't my fave overall. terrible love, conv 16, vanderlyle, england, bloodbuzz, afraid of everyone are easily some of the best songs they ever did

runaway is an ok song. there's much better here but at least it does something for me unlike some of the other tracks, even the ones others rave about (convo 16 never got the hype)

conv 16 is easily one the best songs here imo, the combination of matt's soaring vocals and that sighing choir is almost unbeatable

Sorrow is the best one on this imo. It's the aural equivalent of sad drinking.

Can't help but feel that they should have gone with the alternate version of Terrible Love.

Agreed.

The alternate version of Terrible Love is incredible, its at least as good as the one that was used on the record. Turning down the distortion and bringing the drums further into the mix works brilliantly. That outro.
