The CD is a great display of Incubus' pre-radio music (hence Megalomaniac [which was way too publicized and i dont think it was even that awesome]) at its best. Great alternative music. Calgone is extended and has weird playings throughout most of it after about 5 minutes. Anyway, Summer Romance is a great song and so is a Certain Shade of Green. Incubus will go far in the future. Great CD. Great mixing too. Overall: 7/10.

Wow, did Incubus rip-off Mr. Bungle on this album, or what?! I mean, It's one thing to have been influenced by another band's sound, but to have your band's initial success result from emulating another group without calling yourself a tribute band is denial. This whole album is riddled with Mr. Bungle influence. To make matters worse, they aren't even as talented. Their MTV pop success would never have been possible if these guys didn't use Mom and Dad's intended milk money to buy Bungle's self-titled debut album. Still, the album is good compared to the other material I have heard from Incubus. 3outta5

I have this album but i only listened to it a few times before i decided i didn't like it, with the exception of a couple of tracks (summer romance and vitamin). I'm a fan of other incubus stuff and don't say that i only like the 'modern' Incubus because i have 'Fungus Amungus' and i like that album. This review prompted me to listen again to the cd after a few months of leaving it, but still i think i'm missing something. It's very highly rated by Incubus fans, but i just can't seem to get into it - the album seems to be missing the knockout killer tracks required, and nothing seems greatly memorable to me. Maybe i just need to listen to it more? ( i have listened to it all the way about 8 times...)

^^^

To the guy bringing up Mr Bungle references, i also have all the Bungle albums and all the Incubus albums. The band have said previously they are big fans of Mike Patton and were definitly influenced by him and his bands, but it is only an influence. This album doesn't contain the trademark fairground music, mixed with death metal, mixed with funnily insane vocals and the constant changes within songs. This is completely different from Bungle, and much more of a traditional sounding album ( even though its not, but its tame compared to Bungle).

There is an influence of course, as in just about every piece of music ever has been influenced by the music before it, but that's about it. The only way someone could create an album free of influence would be if they had never heard music in their lifetime and created something completely new. The results could be fun....

Don't worry you are not alone! I've listened to all of their albums countless times, so many times it would seem as though I listen to nothing else... lol... and SCIENCE is my least favourite Incubus album...It's not that I don't like SCIENCE... I like it more than most albums out there, just not more than any of their other albums.

Magic Medicine ruins this album completely... I must say. It's painful for me to listen to this song... omg...

From my experience on music forums/websites I've found that there are two kinds of Incubus fans... at least...

1) Actual fans who like all their albums and most if not all of their songs. These are the people who don't skip tracks and just play the cd from start to finish... it doesn't really matter what song is playing... as long as it's Incubus. Usually having a favourite album like MY MV or now that it's actually out A Crow Left of the Murder

2) "Fans" who only like, and only listen to SCIENCE. Their favourite song is A Certain Shade of Green like 99% of the time, and they also tend to like LP and crap like that. These "fans" never like MV... they think it's the crappiest album to grace the face of the planet... scary...

These two kinds of fans are really just based off of people I've really met, or talked to in length on message boards... but it's kinda scary how someone can act like the biggest fan of a band and only really like a handful of songs off of one album.

And wow this is a long post... ;)

yeah, i see where you are coming from.

i was told on a message board that i'm not a 'true' incubus fan, because i listened to MV. i was disgusted by the person, he was the typical SCIENCE fan boy. yes, i bloody love the album, but there are other albums aswell.

Incubus=my first love. Morning View gets a lot of bashing, just 'cause it's "too mainstream". I guess it's a bit underratingly overrated. I

SCIENCE is my favourite Incubus album and A Certain Shade of Green is one of my fave songs by them...that doesn't make me like LP or crap like that. You shouldn't generalize. MV is my second fave album although i don't like their two hits (Wish You Were Here and Warning are some of Incubus worst songs ever) but i love Just a Phase, Circles, Are You In?, etc.

anyway...SCIENCE is one of my favourite albums ever, and deserves 4,75/5.

PS - have you heard any catchier bassline and any bass sound better than in Are You In?

Finally it's 'Calgone' to end the album. Starts with a very mysterious feel. Lots of odd sounds along with the guitar and a sweeping vocal make it feel very strange. The bass kicks in (And it's a very cool bass riff) it all builds up then bang. It's full speed and the chorus is a killer one. Brandon is signing at 1000 words per minute. The verse doesn't slow the pace down one bit. Then it's back to the chorus which is more melodic this time and the next verse is a little more melodic to though it doesn't slow down. Then it gets to the end of the song and it is literally 10 minutes of crap. Just ambient noise and unlike with other artists it's very boring.
have you decently heard the bonus track? it has some pretty good things on it!

I'm surprised at how you reviewed "Redefine". I think it's definitely one of the best songs on the album.

The Lyrics are incredible and possibly the best on S.C.I.E.N.C.E.

The drums and dijeridu were awesome and the song is pretty unique from the rest of the CD.

amazing cd, crap review- how can you say that nebula is the best track and the opposite for deep inside. Deep inside along with glass, new skin, summer rommance are by far the best songs , although i like pretty much all the songs on this album

I have to say that the secret track on this album is remarkbly like a mr.bungle track. One of the bands biggest early influences. Have you noticed how similar brandon and patton's voices are?

Also, after a few listens magic medicine does get exceptionally boring, but the rest of the album is killer.

My favourite tracks are new skin, redefine, glass and calgone. Oh and deep inside and anti-gravity love song, actually scrap that, i love all the songs on this album bar magic medicine (including the secret track).

does anybody know if s.c.i.e.n.c.e. stands for anything? if it was just plain "science" you could attribute that to the lyrics of several of the songs, but why add the periods?

i have morning view, make yourself, crow and s.c.i.e.n.c.e. of those, the only songs i don't like are drive, i miss you, mexico and warning. i think they're all too popesque. if you wanna rip me apart for not liking drive and warning, go ahead, at least i have opinions and don't follow blindly.

I agree that magic medicine is one of the weaker songs, but I think you're dead wrong about deep inside, I think it is one of the strongest on the album, if not the best. It's brilliant in the way it depicts the song subject (getting high obviously :naughty: ) by being all mellow and going to blistering hardcore within a second, back to mellow just as fast. It's one of the funkiest sons of bitches I have heard by a mainstream band in recent history, and it has the TWO best guitar solos down by Mike for Incubus. The first one is simple, but every single note is picked perfectly and played with a lot of soul, and the second is just beautiful.

I agree with everyone that this is Incubus's best album, and although I'm usually a classic rock guy, this disc gets a 5/5

This is a great CD. I wouldn't say it's better or worse than the other Incubus albums... they're just different.

I think Incubus produces some of the best music there is.

Get "Follow" AKA. "First movement of the Odyssey".

It's one of four songs they made for the Xbox game "Halo 2".

It's one of their best songs. If you can't find it, buy the Halo 2 soundtrack(it's pretty good) or just email me at Emtiph@gmail.com - I'll send you it.

Perfect 5/5
