ire works is arguably their most acclaimed release if you look anywhere but sputnik, i think dissociation finally beat it out on metacritic tho.

"Miss Machine, despite being a damn good record, always felt like somewhat of a retread of Calculating Infinity to me, Ire Works is where the band really found their sound."

Wha?! All three of those albums feel quite distinct to me, but Miss Machine has the most in common with the second half of their discog and feels like a pretty important step out of experimental mayhem and into hardcore palatability. Pretty sure that one is what cemented their appeal for a large chunk of the fanbase. Ire is cool in its way, but feels more like an oddity in the scheme of their discog imo

Yeah I have to say all 3 of those records feel distinct to me, I can see comparing the sound on Miss Machine to that of Option Paralysis (and beyond), but a retreading of CI... like what? Damn, that take just has me so confused, think I listened to different records.

I should revisit OOUITK, according to my rating I REALLY didn't like it, which doesn't sit well with me.

any clues why? For me, Ire Works stands out in terms of experimentation. Weakest is Miss Machine for me cuz production is beyond ass (I think I would enjoy it otherwise)

just took a look at meta critic - why are they hating Option Paralysis so much?

Ire Works absolutely slaps, most replayable album of their for me.

@Wildcard: Sleeping Giant/Phone Home/Unretrofied sound nothing like anything on CI. Plus you have their first ever slow, dirgy section on the 2nd half of Sunshine plus another at the end of the final track, the more punky elements on Highway, new singer, generally less ferocious and fast throughout...yeah not seeing it.

@Demon: Killer is a bit more inconsistent than Dillinger's absolute best but the album's melodic sections are so, so good. It's grown on me this year, I'd say the best stuff on it is the best in their career.

Maybe it’s just me then. It took me forever to actually get into Miss Machine.

And eclipse, I feel like that’s where the band found their sound because they went all in with poppier choruses and it totally worked for them. That and the longer, more experimental and atmospheric tracks (really just Dead as History and especially Mouth of Ghosts) paved the way for songs like Widower and Dissociation.

Really just love that record and I don’t really get where the hate comes from.

@Wildcard: I think some people have a hard time differentiating between good and bad poppier (or 'accessible') tendencies in core music, so therefore its all bad, just to be on the safe side.

Yeah and I guess I understand someone hating Ire Works if they were a big fan of Calculating Infinity.

What I’m getting at is Ire Works shreds and anyone who hates it should try it again sometime.

yeah, I guess you're both right. makes sense. tbh I think best Dillinger is Ire Works and onwards (which does not mean Irony, CI or MM are bad, they are pretty good)

Only got to see them once. Unfortunately for One of Us the Filler tour. Still ruled and they made the songs from that album much better.
