In Rock is slightly better than this imo and Made in Japan, live album or not, is easily my favourite Purple album and my favourite live album of all time.

That's fair enough. This album does lean more towards straight forward hard rock than some of their other albums and seeing as you described Child in Time as too self-indulgent, I can see why you would prefer this album over In Rock and Fireball.

True, it is by far the best song the band has ever wrote.
Machine Head is indeed more straight forward, but In Rock the sound is harsher, more metallic and more aggressive. Furthermore, the introduction of Speed King is pure Metal.
Nontheless, I love both albums.
