"A better analogy would probably be watching a cam recording of a movie. God damn that album art is so good tho "

It's totally fine to not like the production, but this analogy is completely wrong. Why is it so hard to conceive of production as an artistic choice? It's not like they just didn't have the resources to create an album that had a more polished sound, like the person in your analogy doesn't have the resources to access a real copy of a film. Just look at the smoother sound of Bergtatt. It was obvious that they made a conscious decision for the album to sound like it does.

Anyway, I generally like the more primitive production of early metal. It makes it sound unique and creates a certain mood that would be lost in cleaner production. It's not a matter of authenticity or poor production making something inherently good.

Production on this record is perfect, it suits the lyrical theme and concept. The atmopshere it creates wouldn't be there with a "good" sound, the grating harsh tone lends to the lyrics description of a man alone with the harsh reality of nature as he slowly turns into a wild ferral beast.

I just think looking at production on a one dimensional scale of good or bad according to clarity is closed minded.

I swear, Gyro, every time I go on this site you're bashing metal over and over again. You're almost as bad as ALA when it comes to constantly beating a dead horse to prove your point. I get it, you don't like much progressive metal or extreme metal

I listen to a lot of lo-fi music. I'm perfectly fine with hazy, grainy production. There is no production on this tho. It takes out the entire fucking 0-500 hz range. It is maybe the worst produced album I've ever heard and I sincerely doubt it'd take away from the atmosphere to have it sound better..

I'm sorry it just sounds silly to say the production is perfect. What if Jane doe sounded this shitty? You guys would probably say the same thing: perfect.

Yeah. It would. Check the two version of Ruins of Beverast - Rain Upon the impure, cleaner production sucks nearly all the feeling and atmosphere from it. It's fair enough not to like it being quite this harsh, but it is pretty important for this album.
