Ambient Techno would have worked so much better though. Sadness!
Genre tags can be so annoying. More often than not many people hate them yet for some reason they just stick. Happened in the arts too, with impressionism for instance. And now with... djent... eeeew, *shudders*

ambient techno worked better at the time but thinking of everything that falls under the idm umbrella these days i think we could honestly use a few discerning sub-genres to cover everything. "idm" is too vague, i feel like it's often slapped on shit when people are like "well i dont know what else to call this" but "ambient techno" is almost too specific on the other hand.

especially when a lot of "idm" these days is anything but "ambient"

but anyways, the moral of the story is crucify the fuck out of anyone who unironically uses the term "edm" so that it isn't eventually widely considered legitimate enough that it becomes an unavoidable part of the genre lexicon

as long as it remains a catch-all for the watered down LCD trash those cunts listen to I don't mind cuz its kind of funny (ala "brostep"). it's not too late until those fuckers start listening to good electronic and flinging that tag at shit until it sticks

Intelligent Dance Music (IDM) is a dumb name for a great style of music. It's basically any kind of electronic that has faint EDM elements, but too experimental and creative to be played on mainstream radio or in a club. Some of the most well known artists are this group, The Future Sound of London, Flying Lotus, Amon Tobin, Tycho, Jon Hopkins, Thom Yorke, The Orb, and Carbon Based Lifeforms.

I just gave a one-sentence definition of what I read online trying to find what IDM is as a genre, including Allmusic, and there obviously isn't really one given that "It's EDM but weirder and more experimental" is hardly distinctive enough to describe Boards of Canada, let alone all the other artists I mentioned, which all sound pretty different from each other. I think just calling it all electronic music is fine lol
