What I like most about this album is that its easily Opeth's most balanced in terms of sound.

This album has a lot of setimental value for me as it was the first Opeth album I heard, back when it came out. I was about 13 at the time I think.

I wish the production was more dynamic, it feels so one dimensional. Terrific album though, could be a

4.5. The jazzy interludes are great

I think the production is perfectly dynamic. It's certainly much more so than some of the earlier album, which I think suffer mostly from that kind of stiffness, and certainly more dynamic than Deliverance. Plus, I think the consistency of mood lent by the somewhat flat production is intentional - it helps create the mood of the album which is part of what makes it so great. Despite the massive diversity of composition this album is incredibly concise.

The drumming too. This song and Rush's Limelight are the only songs I will drop whatever I'm doing and air-drum to.

I'm not a drummer, but the instrumental interlude just before the end of Baying of the Hounds gets me every time. It's amazing how Lopez controls the feel of the song by changing the drumline even when the rest of the instrumental parts stay constant. I noticed it first there and then began noticing it all over the place. Crafty and brilliant.
