Hours of Wealth is the only song I can listen to all the way through, and the first half of Reverie/Harlequin Forest is good, but that song just seems to keep dragging on. The rest of the songs are pretty mediocre to me.

good review shadows, as always.
at first i didnt like this album as much, but it's definately grown on me... one of my favorites now. I don't necessarily thing the songwriting is better here than on BWP, but it seems to me that the heavy/light transitions have been smoothed out a lot, and at no part of a song does it seem to lose its 'point' if it makes any sense.
plus the musical performances are better for just about every member.

Yeah it's too bad they don't have a font size that literally takes up the whole screen. I would use it every time that Opeth is mentioned in a positive manner.

I love this album. Maybe not my favourite, although I can see it growing on me even more. The arrangements of songs are just awesome, I think the slight backseat the "Death" vocals have been given on this album helps it's progressive sound.
Wilson has really brought an improved sound out of Opeth with his work too.

I have decided Ghost of Perdition was the best song of 2005.

Mikael Akerfeldt is the best vocalist, singing or growling, in metal. Mixed with the indescribable amounts of layers and technicality it is just a beatiful album.
Great review by the way.

Mikael's clean vocals around 6:00 in Ghost of Perdition are orgasmic.
Then again, the entire album is, although I don't think it quite matches up to Still Life or My Arms, Your Hearse. Solid release.

I think your wrong in the fact that they should not stretch out their songs. It's a great review and all, and I tottally respect your opinion, but think that they should keep the long songs. 'Cause that's just Opeth, that's one of the main things that make them so special. Check out the 'To Bid You Farewell', it's 11 minutes of pure accoustic music, with the singing only beginning after 8 minutes, but it's so fucking awesome. If you want intense, normal, unstretched death metal, just buy Hypocrisy or Wintersun or just accept and even embrace their long songs, their patience to take their time. I think some of those songs are some kind of test, to exclude the real opethians from the none-" . If you can stand the long songs, and embrace the sound, and the people keep loving Opeth, than they feel that they're doing the right thing with something very original. (this last bit could be quite oncomprehensionable, but yeah whatever)
Good review, I like the fact that you take your time to make sure you haven't forgotten anything, just like the real Opeth) I rate Ghjost Reveries with a 4.

That's what a girl I know said about Fall Out Boy in general. She of course thinks they're emo too.

The Grand Conjuration is so tight, I am in love with it. Best song on the album in my opinion.

The singing comes in after more like 3 minutes.
Also, the Grand Conjuration is one of the weaker songs on the album, IMO. Good that they tried something a bit different with that song though.

The only thing about having long songs is that you really have to sit down and listen to them to know that they are good.
