I've been loving Dream Theater for quite some time. I'm thinking of picking this one up or Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, I suppose this is better?
Yes, yes, oh God yes.

Edit - The guy who wrote the review a couple of posts ago, the woman's voice in Home is meant to be Victoria and one of the brothers (I get mixed up, the one she is having the affair with) having sex.
What other Dream Theater albums do you have?
Actually, none:upset: I only borrowed Images And Words from my friend two years ago and listened to some songs off Train Of Thought and Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence.

Images and Words along with SFAM are arguably their most solid work. Metalheads will probably take more of a liking to Awake and Train of Thought, as the other albums are more progressive in nature. So as for your question, I'd say get SFAM, but make sure to check out 6 Degrees (and all their other albums) if you find a liking to the band.

this is not a debate forum. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. You can reason with them, but keep in mind that this is NOT a debate forum.

You certainly wouldn't know that from reading all of the threadsi IN this forum...

Anyway, I don't think anyone should complain of DT being too technical for the sake of being technical--i mean, its what they DO. If you don't like that type of music, you don't like that type of music, but that is entirely different'...

i love this album . . . the only complaint i have with it is the spirit carries on . . . which is a bit of a church oriented song . . . other than that, 5/5 . . .
Dream Theater-Scenes From a Memory

6. Beyond This Life: This song is more metal than anything so far. Its got a pretty cool riff that repeats through most of the song. The chorus and whatnot is far quieter and more calm than the metal fury found in the rest of this tune. The solo section is awesome, in this one they pull off solos that sound reminiscent of classic rock. This song deals with the murder mystery of Victoria. 4/5

7. Through Her Eyes: This is a ballad. It tells about how sad Nicholas is to hear of Victoria’s death. It’s slow, and it has a pretty melody, but not anything too special. 3/5
How can you give "Beyond This Life" 4/5  when your report makes the song sound like it's a 5/5 song, and when I listen to the song I believe it's a 5/5 song.

As for "Through Her Eyes" I would be tempted to slap you if I could  , "not anything too special", it's a great song that makes me think it is one of the best songs ever in the history of recorded music and in Dream Theater's history.

Apart from that, well done on a report well done :thumb:

I'd have to disagree about you on "One Last Time", though it disn't quite fit in with the story it still leaves quite an impression on me, especially with the freaky clown music in the last 15 seconds, with becomes very freaky if you hear it by yourself in the dark walking around when you can only see a few feet in front of you.

But apart from that small dis-agreement I think you've made a great review for a great CD.

This is easily my favorite Dream Theater album. I've listened to it all the way through about 4 times.

Good review.
i would give it 4.5/5, because of the song Dance of Eternity, which is way too technical for me. Without that song this album is simply outstanding.
Danc e of Eternity was the last song I got into on the album; it's quite dense. It takes you into an entirely different mood and requires like a different part of your brain or something. Either way, I'm sure it will grow on you.

And on another topic, I don't see why people hate 6 Degrees so much. I'd say that it is their second strongest full length album. Images and Words, although awesome, is not as strong as 6 Degrees. The diversity is just amazing. Different styles of metal and alternative, as well as classical and classic prog areas just make me melt.

Very nice and accurate review! :thumb: I LOVE this CD!! I have lost track of how many times I have listened to it... This is, easily, one of my favorite albums of all time, and, definitely, my favorite Dream Theater album. If you haven't checked out Dream Theater yet, this is my suggestion to you.

I love it. its the first dream theater album i got, purely out of impulse and cause id heard so much about john's playing. i have to say on first listen i wasnt convinced, then after repeatedly trying it after about a week i finally manged to get into it, and i was bloody impressed. home is an amazing tune, the solo does drag on a little, but with riffs and the run into the chorus being as good as that, who cares!

My least favorite Theater album. I've heard I&W, Awake, ACoS, 6DoIT, and Tot and I enjoy them all more than SfaM. It just gets boring in the middle and I can't listen to it all the way through. LaBrie's vocals really irk me at times.

this is the best DT disc, with the band at its most focused and most melodic. Forget the plodding metal of Awake and the ADD bewilderment of 6 Degrees, this is the DT album to get.
