Yeah it is! I heard that track a few years ago, and I couldn't believe it wasn't a single.

I can relate to it so much too.

I could've put the entire lyric sheet to Drugs or Me, or most other songs on the album, but I think you missed my original point. Originally I had meant that the album was decent in that it was fun music but the lyrics are literally cliched angsty line after cliched angsty line... which is fine when some of the songs are honest to goodness solid pop-rock songs. The slower ballads are dragged down because of the poor lyrics. That is what I meant. No the lyrics don't have to be groundbreaking, and simple honesty is often the best policy (see: Dylan or Waits). But simple honesty does not have to include universal cliches. That was all my point was, if you notice my 3 rating it's because I think it's a GOOD album and if you think it's a classic then good on you. You backed yourself up well in your review, it was good.

Yah dude, I'm not having a go, just arguing my corner :p. I just think it's a matter of the context of those 'clichéd' lines. "Can't say I was never wrong, but some blame rests on you," is trite without what comes before it, but the way the song lyrically progresses through more... important assertions of how relationships are two way things, makes that the climax. The lyrics aren't your generic pop-punk bullshit about OH DARLING LOOK WHAT A DIFFICULT SITCH THIS IS - at least not to me. Half of it's also in the delivery, je crois.

One thing I would say is that however this record comes across to someone, it seems to carry the weight of history. Whether it's that it grew off you because you matured musically and lost touch with it, or you hold it close because of the memories associated with it, I think Futures' value in 2009 for a lot of people depends on the way it's seen over the past 5 years, and the way it seems to connect to their comparative youth.

Exactly, I've lost touch with it, but at the same time get the old hint of nostalgia which perhaps keeps my rating slightly above what it would be if the album came out today.

And I know you're not having a go haha. You back up your side well and I feel I do the same, it makes for a good discussion. As long as it doesn't dissolve into a matter of "you're wrong you stupidhead" I'm always up for a differing opinion haha. My point of view is that cliches can not hold any substantial weight. So whereas a lyrical progression may lead to a line such as you mentioned, the fact that it is a cliche nullifies any meaning it could have. It depersonalizes the sentiment when the personal is what is needed most. It's like starting an essay with a broad, sweeping generalization, it's indefensible and unnecessary.

It's a hard thing to avoid, as a writer I know. But the more one writes the better they get at bending things into more original light. I find JEW have never progressed out of this cliched stating format.
