I just signed up to Sputnik Music out of a feeling of fellowship with Trifolium who seems as obsessed about this record as I am.

How To Measure A Planet sounds awesome, feels awesome thanks to musicians who are playing so tight together. The band has one of the best vocalists in the world but you can tell she loves the music and she's part of it not on top of it (listen to Great Ocean Road, low key vocal performance and yet the emotionnal result is huge). Wow.

I'm still mindblown after 24 years listening to this album. I still have chills everytime I listen to it (with a peak - predictably - during Travel).

I hadn't listened to it for ages since it's hard to find the apropriate context with a wife and kids at home but... It's always been there, I guess some of you understand what I mean.

I'd love to meet one of these guys and ask him/her everything about this masterpiece.

Absolutely LOVE it!

"I just signed up to Sputnik Music out of a feeling of fellowship with Trifolium"

PERFECT first post

honestly haven't read that many interviews etc. with the Gathering (weird given that they're maybe my fav band), but when they announced Beautiful Distortion they were kind enough to set me up with a promo directly - think it was Hans who got back to us, and he seemed super down to earth and disarmingly trusting given how spurious my credentials were/are lol (was very much a whatever you need vibe). band always struck me as good people

I must say, there aren't so many reviews about this record, it feels really good to know that some guys somewhere in the world are just as mesmerized as I am about it!

Concerning the band, I wander if they felt they really had something huge with HTMAP.

Chousi YEEESSSSSSSSSS!!!!! Very hard agree with so many things you said about this perfect album and band!

Also very much this:

"Concerning the band, I wander if they felt they really had something huge with HTMAP."

I've wondered about this too for very long. Do they even know what they've made with this one? How special it is for so many people?

Welcome to the site, it's lovely here 💖

I guess they didn't notice HTMAP was so special. Maybe it's a group thing, everyone bringing creativity and reacting spontaneously to what the other members did, and everything clicked with ease with no time to ask themselves thousands of questions.

I always wondered how they bounced back just after only a year or so after this one to publish a record - If then Else- which is pretty straightforward and really cool.

After HTMAP, a dense and rather intellectual album, they could have lost all their spontaneity.

I also have a message to those who dislike Liberty Bell. Of course, it's not the emotional peak of the album but hey, these guys are having such a wonderful time together rocking on that tune. It shows. And it's so enjoyable.

Absolutely, I looooove Liberty Bell. A sunny and high energy moment, does wonders to the flow and coherence of this thing, and is super enjoyable on its own too.

But hey, it figures that we would love it!

What are your thoughts on their other stuff? The Anneke years? Disclosure (!!!)?

Well, to be perfectly honest, I have a lot to catch up.

I sometimes have troubles listening to a new album by an artist who just moved me upside down with their previous album. So after enjoying HTMAP in depth, and rocking to - If Then Else - I didn't buy the following records for fear of being disappointed (I know it might sound weird to some but sometimes you can see flaws in the records following a "masterpiece" that might make you reconsider what you cherished most). I saw them live during The Souvenirs tour though and it was great. I remember Anneke's first notes that night: like an enormous wave pulling you up all of a sudden. I think the only other vocalist that left me in such awe was Maynard James Keenan from Tool/A Perfect Circle. Hugo Prinsen Geerligs on bass was super impressive too.

I got hooked again on The Gathering a few weeks ago and ingurgitated tons of live videos on Youtube, including the fantastic TG 25, and I guess I'm ready now to at last buy these records and listen to them with a clear mind.

Oh and I really enjoy Mandylion and Nighttime Birds, they're solid albums and Anneke is going 200% on these records. I like their authentic romantic approach - with some little bad taste here and there to be honest, wich oddly makes me like them even more.

Chousi people will start thinking you're a me alt soon haha, so much relatable stuff there (minus the Tool bit, they're not entirely my thing).

When I first got to know TG it was through the then recently released Home album. For the longest time, that one and Planet were the only ones I checked, because I loved them SO dearly. So I totally understand you not wanting to check their other stuff. Know that if you do, you'll find they're absolutely lovely as well.

Especially if you've enjoyed that wonderful TG25 set. Oh my!

Also ultra [2] at:

Anneke's 200% on Mandy and Birds 💕

Odd charm of the occasional bad taste 💚💖

Band in general is ultra charming and genuine.

Travel is the ultimate mise en abyme, celebrating an artist that didn't get the recognition he should have had during his lifetime. Well, here we are with this wonder of a song by a band that didn't get so much credit (and yet, always seemed grateful for the success they got).

I never met anyone IRL that knew or liked this band. So I have a lot of solidarity with you guys. It's nice whenever these threads get bumped though it doesn't happen too often
