Steve Morse is an amazing guitar player. And Airey imitates Lord pretty well. Listening to this atm.

Solid stuff. Purpendicular is easily better imo, but this is good enough.

Easily Purple's best album since 'Perfect strangers'. The sound on here generally resembles that of the band's 70's period when they would welcome Blues and Hard Rock influences onto almost every song. 'House of pain', 'Razzle dazzle', 'I got your number' to name but a few are some of the best songs Deep Purple have written in a decade or so, and although the record is without Blackmore or Lord's talent, Steve Morse and new member Don Airey more than make up for the loss. Gillan's vocals are still weak in comparison to his earlier years but he certainly does try and has a great range in style.

Bananas is cool but I think the best modern Purple album is either Purpendicular or Now What?!. If I had to choose one I'd go with Now What?!.

Not a bad album, almost as good as Purpendicular.

I don't blame you, in fact I think I'll do the same once I listen to their discography.

It always pains me to pan a Deep Purple album, but BANANAS was something of a disappointment. I've listened to it many times through the years and it never really seems to grow on me as I'd hoped it might. It's pretty much the same formula as their prior work with Steve Morse and does possess that same charming delivery from Ian Gillan. This was the first album featuring Don Airey on keyboards, replacing founding member Jon Lord who'd decided to retire at this point. Airey does a good job at preserving the classic Purple sound, but there are noticeably less fireworks between he and Morse. There are some likeable enough songs, but I'd be hard pressed to cite any truly great ones here as most as fairly unremarkable. The single "Haunted" is a nice enough ballad and "Pictures Of Innocence" exudes more energy than the rest. "Silver Tongue" also features a nice guitar break from Steve Morse, but kind plods along a bit predictably otherwise. Not really a bad album, but rather bland and average by Purple's standards.

Good point. Airey's best effort with Purple until this point, has to be on Now What!?. New album is probably going to be dominated by Airey too.

Very diverse for a Deep Purple album and no filler, best Deep Purple album since Burn
