That's of my favorite Matt lyrics, lol
While I prefer everything they've done since this one does probably have his best lyrics overall.

Agreed
I don't care what you're into, I'll put velvet ropes around you if that's what you need!

Jamming this, so great. This was my introduction to The National. Probably second to Boxer these days, since Boxer is pretty much a perfect album to me. But this one's so atmospheric.

Friend Of Mine is seriously incredible, maybe the band's most overlooked track.

^ hell yeah, that one's such a jam. I love how bittersweet it is. The narrator expresses such intense longing (however founded), and yet the melody is so jubilant, especially the chorus. Tbh I wish that was the rocker these guys played from this album rather than Abel.. well either that one or All the Wine

still kinda baffles me how anyone could think tfwm or swb are better than this
|
| |
I mean I kinda get it, those albums might be cleaner to some, larger and more elegant-sounding as well.. I think they have a little more instant appeal in that regard. People dig sweeping, slightly sentimental anthems. But that's why I always found this album so special, it sounds so youthful but it's so fucking masterful..

SWB has nothing that stands up to the top 5 tracks here

This one's just a tiny bit too rough around the edges for me is why I prefer TWFM

All the Wine has been one of my 20 favorite songs of all time since the second I heard it. Mr November might objectively be their best song. Abel and Lit Up rawk much better than most of their discog save Available, Karen talks about cock in hand. I mean there isn't much that can top this.

twfm is too smooth n syrupy which is i prefer this one
|
| |
Biggest flaw with SWB is that there's no track that competes with their all-time best. It's really great all around though.

@Wren I think it's just a matter of personal taste rather than one being objectively better than the other.

@BigHans
nail on the head man, Mr. November's still a live staple for some reason. And All the Wine is magic too

Mr. November is the best song on this and one of their best songs for sure.

I recently relistened to this for the first time in a while and I forgot how crushing Daughters of the Soho Riots is, one of their more underappreciated songs probably.

Daughters and Geese both took the longest to grow on me. Geese might be my favorite on here.
