One of the greatest summer albums. I listen to this, and I imagine laying down in a hammock as the sunshine melts my worries away and cows float peacefully by

Also I chuck 'Car Wash Hair' onto the end of this album as a bonus track, you need to track down that tune from the same era too

this was perfect until Blue and Black

Blue and Black grows - it's sort of like a Cure song narrated by the crumbling rock creature in The Neverending Story. I now rate it as a 5/5 tune lol

I just didn't vibe with his deep voice tbh. rest of this is really damn good though

His voice is very odd, it becomes less erm, 'overwhelming' or 'distracting' on subsequent spins is all I'd say

I believe that. shaping up to be a 4/4.5

Have you listened to any other Mercury Rev albums? 'Boces', 'See You on the Other Side', 'Deserter's Songs' and 'All is Dream' are all really good too...and all very different from each other.
One of my favourite bands, once you get used to their sonic world everything sorta falls into place. They really have this alternative dreamlike universe quality to them. I prefer them to the Flaming Lips (as good as that band's best work is).

To hear just how different they became just spin 'Spiders & Flies' from 'All is Dream' - haunting piano ballad

I'm on a psych binge rn but this is one of the few discogs I will be checking afterwards (including The Brian Jonestown Massacre)

As their career progressed they became less experimental and psych...and yet there still remained something otherworldly and surreal about them even when they were effectively writing vaguely Beatles-esque baroque pop music.
This sounds cheesy but, at their best, there's a magic quality to their music. It's a discog you won't regret checking...up to 'All is Dream'. All bets are off after that one, they then went very 'new age' and soppy.

ahhh yeah dont wanna listen to new age, not my thing. but that sounds cool. thanks again for this rec Doof, was honestly what I was looking for, even if this last song is going on forever haha
