The last two songs are ridiculous

I don't know how I feel about this record yet. It's the first Converge album that's been a chore to listen to from the beginning, which is probably why I've only listened 3 or 4 times. I really liked the first two songs that came out and I was stoked to listen to it when I first got it, but I'm starting to think that's just because it's been 3 years since No Heroes. My impression of it at the moment is that there are few amazing tracks (the title track especially) and some fairly shit ones (the acoustic one and the last song especially) and the rest I'm indifferent to at this point. I'll reserve judgement but given how I've reacted to every other Converge album, I don't feel too good about it.

review is weirdly written "Converge, the supposed kings of metalcore, have finally released a disappointing record. Considering their impressive track record, this is hardly a surprising feat. "
do you really mean that it is not surprising that Converge released a disappointing record? and would you call a disappointing album a "feat"?
also lots of redundancies:
"Existing for nearly twenty years, the group has constantly and consistently progressed their sound in new ways since their inception."
constantly basically means consistently and it's sort of a given that when progressing your sound it is happening in "new ways" (progression!)
review is also really bitter (why assume the reader will hate your opinion?) and reviewer assumes a lot of things he brings up are actually "poor" and "bad" compared with just things he doesn't like.
I don't really disagree with the rating (average is pretty ambiguous) but I think the review is weird. too many "really"'s

"Albums in general work because of their cohesiveness; " albums don't need to work anymore for the most part because people download one track at a time.

After having seen this as a featured review on Metacritic.com, I had to read it.
Now, I never respond to music criticism since I think anyone who gets loud about a subjective opinion is an asshole - but this review... One of the worst and saddest I've ever read.
Let the record show: I like Converge, and I don't have beef with people who don't. I DO have issues with unintelligent journalism however. There are so many things here that are objectively in poor style but I won't be a total dick.
Right off the bat the critic writes - "'You Fail Me' saw the group slowing down (...) 'No Heroes' took the opposite approach by (...) generally reducing their sound to its bare minimum. "
Ummm, what? Did you really listen to these records? "You Fail Me" is way more of a minimalist approach than "No Heroes". That's obvious. And you say it's slower? What? Because of "In her Shadow" and "You Fail Me (song)"? Go back and listen to "Jane Doe" and you will find a lot more down time on that record than any other Converge record. "You Fail Me" is the most punk rock recording Converge has ever put out and considers the least amount of experimentation. "No Heroes" is so sonically dense I don't think they could fit anymore gain or punch in that record. Not what I usually look for in a Converge record.
You do little to back up any of your arguments against the flaws on this record. Instead, you gesture that you didn't really sit down and take any time with it. I don't think this record is Converge's best, second best, or even third; I do, however, think it surpasses "No Heroes" in terms of cohesion (in which there is plenty of it on this record, please don't listen to the joker who wrote this review). Your quips about the guest musicians being less interesting is compelling since all of the guest have a more expansive musical pallet than any of the members in Converge. Your "press release" metaphor is tacky and horribly trite. "Trap Them = unimaginative," man, that is a petty and hollow piece of critique. Clearly your ignorance outshines your incapable ears - or unimpressive prose. I can't tell which is going on here. Maybe both?
This is a review that a young kid with a big ego writes on a Myspace blog. This is not how "Staff" journalists at Sputnik should be writing... or anyone for that matter. Mr. Dillon - please keep it on Myspace.
