semi-related, but I only have 40 pages or so let in Bunny Munro. Very different than Ass Saw the Angel. Much more accessible, but I don't like it as much. Also impossible not to envision the main character as Cave.

Revised thoughts: definitely some strong material here, especially at either end of the album. It admittedly drags a tad at times, possibly a little overlong. Emphatically mid-range Cave. Ahead of Murder Ballads. I’d definitely take it over Boatman’s Call, Lazarus & Ghosteen. Doesn’t touch his better material.

This has strengthened its standing as upper mid-tier Cave. Trending towards tier 2, potentially

Less fat than I’d remembered

Surprising return to form after the mellow Boatman, my only issue is the tracklist, it should have ended with “We Came Along This Road”, the last 2 songs doesn’t do much to me. Slightly better than Murder Ballads or Abattoir/Lyre, close to his best records. The accompanying live DVD “God is in the House” is also pretty good, contains Saint Huck, which is telling.

I’ve recently re-read Bunny Munro, still found it entertaining, but I can’t help thinking of it as a rip-off of any of Charles Bukowski’s novels. Which is strange since Cave has repeatedly stated how much he dislikes Bukowski.

Yeah, honestly this *MIGHT* surpass Abattoir/Lyre (already have it ahead of Murder Ballads) but I’m rearranging as I go. The Lyre half is a clear step down, so the consistency suffers. This is more evenly spread for the most part

I’m alternating between this and early Cave at the minute. Situation / time dependent.

Hmm, yeah I get what you mean about the closing pair even though I do like them in isolation. Overall this is quite excellent / consistent though and think it needs bumping up. It definitely benefits from a lot more colour (vs Boatman)

I didn't have much expectation for this one before hearing it for the first time, and it was such a pleasant surprise! Have you seen the video for "Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow"? No less than Jason Donovan is in it, dancing, raising his hands up to the sky. A great moment.
