But this album isn't even really prog though, so reviewer's point is moot anyway.

PT are pretty pretentious... Well SW is.
And on the 'kings of prog' note, DT came to oz and played in stadiums. Opeth came to Oz and played in hidey holes. DT sold waaaaaaaay more tickets I wouldve thought, looking around at the crowd when I was there anyway.

CrazyGreg, in no way is Dream theater pretentious. If your going to leave a comment, make sure you know what you are talking about first.

They see progmaster rollin', he insultin'
Yeah. This album doesn't have as many run-on prog instrumental sections are Leviathan, I thought. Their prog influences seem to vary between releases.

I've heard all their records, and I disagree with your opinion, do I not know what I'm talking about?

I disagree, I believe Mastodon is prog metal, specifically in the song structures.

Every prog band is pretentious in some way, you have to be to write 20 minute songs with OTT subject matter.

"Porcupine Tree's last few releases have not been so great"
Better than 'Signify' or 'On the Sunday of Life' by far

just cause a song is long doesnt mean its bad. Rush and Pink Floyd have MANY songs that are quite long, are they bad too?

A band that always comes up in these discussions is Porcupine Tree. I have always had a hard time calling them Prog Metal at all. What makes them metal?
Is it just cos SW produced Blackwater Park? Were they known well before this? Were they considered 'prog metal' then? Their sound while its evolved, it hasnt changed beyond that same kindve spacey psychedelic stuff.

benzum I actually agree with you, but Mastodon is Prog. They are labeled as Prog. They have not publicly stated that they are not prog.

The distorted guitars and double bass drumming have a metal-ish feel to them, but they're a prog-rock, not prog-metal, band.

there not really prog metal, there more rock than metal in my opinion.
Is it just cos SW produced Blackwater Park?

"just cause a song is long doesnt mean its bad. Rush and Pink Floyd have MANY songs that are quite long, are they bad too?"
What the fuck are you talking about? Nobody said that long songs were bad, someone just stated that you'd have to be pretentious to want to write epically long songs. Read thoroughly before responding X_x
"but they're a prog-rock, not prog-metal, band."
No thanks, I prefer Metalz.

I think dream theater is 'on top' because they have a slightly more mainstream sound when compared to Opeth and PT. I consider Opeth the leader in prog because they don't have a bad release, 9 albums and they are all excellent and innovative. The same can't be said for DT.
PT comes up in these sorts of conversations because they are a pretty influencial band in the genre, not to mention most fans of the bands you have been saying are more than likely to be fans of PT
