"an album that pulls equally from Lost Paradise, Icon and Draconian Times while still retaining a modern sound"
"the choruses are no longer the driving factor of each song"
I think these lines say everything about the album.
This is the first time in their career they used 7-string guitars, which really adds to the heaviness of the album.
Very good album, I like it better than In Requiem and very good review

my first paradise lost album and i like what i hear ..going to get this It seems nuts that a band that's been around for this long still has people that haven't at least checked them out before. It's cool, though, because better late than never and this is a great album to start with. This is the first time in their career they used 7-string guitars, which really adds to the heaviness of the album.
Very good album, I like it better than In Requiem I didn't know they used 7-string guitars on this album. That's cool. I like this and In Requiem the same, but for different reasons.

Cool. Had you heard them before I rec'd them to you? Her other band is called "Stray" and is similar to Unter Null, but not as harsh.

I've been listening to a lot of Anathema and My Dying Bride but never got around to PD shame really

Listening to this now, finally. So far the highlight is the riffs...some of them were surprisingly intricate. Nick's voice sounds a little weak...I dunno if he's just getting old or if it's the production (TBH, that's what I lean towards, as he sounded fantastic on the last album e.g. the Enemy).
I also like the Opeth-esque clean breaks.

I don't know if you can call them "Opeth-esque" considering the fact that they've been doing that since the early nineties.

I don't see whats so great about Opeth anyway. I mean yeah they got some wicked tunes, but other then that thier kinda average. bumped this up to a four

What Opeth albums have you heard? I'd suggest Blackwater Park.
An album that I think you'd like is "The Collapse" by System Divide.
