I mean, it's followed up by Gyroscope, which is about the more realistic portrayal of social anxiousness and out-of-place-ness you're annoyed You Are Invited doesn't discuss, so yeah, kind of
always viewed the YAI as the psyched-up urge to go to the thing and Gyroscope the awkward realization that you don't actually enjoy being there

Accordining to Wikipedia:
"Chad Clark (the producer) also originally did not want "You Are Invited" to be on Emergency & I, finding the song too sentimental."
and
"You Are Invited," a song about an anonymous invitation that comes through the mail, deals with belonging and selflessness."
Also there's pretty much no mention in reviews that the album is ironic or sarcastic... nor does it come off that way at all. :/
Did you guys decide this album was being ironic because the lyrics would be too painful if it wasn't? Because that's all I'm getting here.

When I do a Wikipedia search with "The Dismemberment Plan irony" and "The Dismemberment Plan sarcasm" almost all results lead to the album The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified. And the few that are related to Emergency and I only mention Memory Machine being sarcastic.
Seeing as Emergency and I is far more extensively written about than Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified, I'm going to go ahead and say that this album isn't really all that ironic, but is instead super genuine and honest (which makes sense since it comes off as super genuine and honest)

You Are Invited is great. "I didn't think much about it / It seemed like a really dumb joke", I'd say, is an example of the sense of labor that attends sincerity and reaching out to other people for Travis, which may be where the "irony" angle comes in. I wouldn't call the song "ironic," but it's sort of funny that he uses the letter to go to two parties and doesn't enjoy either of them, lol. Corniness is def part of the deal though, I agree. But I like that the corniness is counterbalanced by other forces

The character in the song accepts the "you are invited" spiel by the end of it though, even after resisting it at first as if Travis Morrison is is trying to tell you that regardless his feelings, the advice was good enough to pass on

I just realized this is exactly the problem you have, or close to it. I think the "contradictions" you find in the lyrics are what make the song interesting, although again I wouldn't deny that there's a certain brio and uplift devoid of irony in the chorus and how it relates to the verses
