this album is pretty average - true - but 1 is a bit harsh. The first three tracks are pretty ordinary rock numbers, nothing special, but not terrible. Fortuneteller is quite cool, Breakfast in Bed reminds me of Bad Company, which can't be all bad. Wicked Ways is quite fun, nice descending riff shared by Lord & Blackmore. I agree that the production is not that great & Blackmore's playing get's kind of lost, but still . . . it doesn't get worse than 1

JLT is a very good singer who in DP was in the wrong band. At least he was a professional and did not destroy DP as did Bolin and Hughes.

I really can't stand JLT - only Deep Purple album I have been unable to finish listening to.

Comparing this to Machine Head and In Rock isn't fair -- it's actually a pretty decent album in its
own right. There's a lot of energy in The Cut Runs Deep and Wicked Ways, the former of which has a
fantastic organ solo, and King of Dreams is an excellent mid-paced song a la Perfect Strangers.
It's not consistently great, but give this a fair shot and you'll find it has some professional grade
material, particularly if you're a big fan of Lord's organ, which takes the lead in this more than any
other DP album. Rating this a 1 is tantamount to trolling, and I would be surprised if MvdL put more
than a few minutes into listening to this with quotes like, " I sure as hell cannot hear Jon Lord is
playing". You've got some great reviews, man, but I'm just not buying it this time.

This is not the horrible album that most people make it to be. Nevertheless, it is not a true Deep Purple album. It sounds more like the last few Rainbow albums with Turner on vocals. Turner gives a dramatic tone that doesn't match with what Deep Purple represents. It's not that he is a bad singer. He's more like a diva and less of a rocker though.

I agree that this is generic hard rock. Listening to this atm.

Yeah, by the second track I'd had enough.

This particular album brings back a good childhood memory for me. In the years before I even attended secondary school (Where you're 11-16) my father would put this album (cassette format, naturally) into the car stereo and the two of us would be singing along to the likes of 'king of dreams', 'the cut runs deep' and 'Fortuneteller', having heard them so many times. Now I look back and although I don't think it's that significant an album in Deep Purple's career, it's certainly one that remains a so-called "childhood favourite". It's pretty weak by Deep Purple's standards, the vocals nowhere near as effective as Ian Gillain's and the keyboard effects not being as eccentric or as interesting as usual, but it's certainly not their worst either.

nostalgic album that was / is highly enjoyable for you warrants a higher rating than a 3, no?

3=Good. This album is "Good". Thus I rate it a 3.

It kinda reminded me of DP, however it is not a "true" Deep Purple album, as mentioned before.

I believe the term you're looking for is "Deep Rainbow."

Difficult to Cure is a 5 compared to this

Album Rating: 3.5
Yeah I prefer Difficult to Cure too but only slightly compared to this one. Pedro is correct in naming this one "Deep Rainbow" as 3/5 of the lineup is the same for Slaves and Masters and Difficult to Cure.

I don't care how bad the rest of this album is, The Cut Runs Deep slays and King of Dreams has a wicked chorus.

I agree with some of the others here; this isn't such a bad album. Rating this a 1 is pretty harsh and doesn't do the album justice. There's quite a few pretty good tracks on this one and King Of Dreams is my favourite. I do agree that the sound is a bit too slick and generic, but that's also a sign of the times, nonetheless it's a solid production imo.

Uggghh! Fucking terrible. I hate this album. It' so bland. I have to admit, i'm not a fan of Turner. I lost interest in Rainbow when he came in. Turner is, at best, an ordinary singer & a weak writer. After not listening to S&M after a number of years, I recently gave it a spin to see if it was as bad as I remembered it to be. It is.

Wow what a lazy review, don't even bother to talk about the actual music.
To me any album with the rock gods Paice, Lord, Blackmore and Glover have a starting score of 3/5. That would be a fair score to just hear them jamming.
On this record, thanks to JLT it sounds much more like Rainbow and I think its actually better that some of the LPs he recorded back them ; yeah any rainbow album would be tbetter if Paice, Lord and Glover were onboard (just look at early Whitesnake records for evidence).
Anyway, King of Dreams, Breakfast in bed,, Cut Runs Deep, Fire in the Baswment, Truth Hurts, fortune teller .... all rock
