If instead you wrote "while actually expressing so little imo" it wouldn't have stopped me from being curious or change my fixation here.

It's the description of the music as "expressing little" that I'm curious about.

"i could draw commonalities from other records for aspects that i consider expressive, but that's contrived and a bit naive"

That's what I'm interested in though :]

Your answer is interesting. I'm not sure If I would personally call something with several of those qualities more expressive than something lacking them though. I'd have to think about it more. Is noisier music more expressive than less noisy music? etc

"i trust my intuitive response enough..  and i'd like to think the same would be true for anyone"

Ah I'm definitely weird then. I wouldn't say that something is lacking expressiveness just because of my intuitive response to the music.

"gonna hazard that your view of whatever it is that this album supposedly suggests/articulates/_does_..."

I was curious what exactly put the onus on me there. I don't think I made any claim about it expressing something outside the fact it's recorded and sold.

I will answer your question after some thought though as I struggle to describe exactly what it is about music itself that creates the impression it leaves on me. My internet keeps dying so it takes me a while to reply.

Ok I wrote something.

"manatees dance's" electronic drones are hypnotic and "psychedelic" inducing a trance state and thoughts of entering a different state of consciousness. I find the track and album to be comforting. Perhaps partly due to the lo-fi nature of the recording.

"Penguin Penguin" is an abrupt change in mood from the prior track due to the sudden end of the drone in the intro and the increase in volume. I could see this being either joyful or anxiety inducing for me depending on the mood. Danse Manatee suggests thoughts from a mind in a delirious state (perhaps my own). This song achieves this due to the incomprehensible vocals being manipulated and buried under the guitars and electronics. The way the unpredictable track flows reinforces this impression of a delirious stream of consciousness.

"Another white singer" is another variation on the theme which is more childlike. Adding off beat percussion and what almost sounds like bird calls. The distressed singing voice juxtaposed with the joyous calls adds to the confusion and surreal nature of the album.

The guitar in "Essplode" creates feelings of longing. How exactly it does that I couldn't tell you, but I'm sure there is music theory related to how a particular use of notes can evoke this feeling.

I didn't write more notes because I got distracted by the album. I hope that is something close to what you are looking for.

I think lots of heartstring-tugging songs have that perfect fifth and then lower the bass note one half step thing that essplode has, yeah
