I’m with pika: the overall sense I get is a lack of focus. Bad album; all the long songs are pretty much unbearable

this is 100% one of those records that triumphs fReEdOm of xPresshon in the extreme while actually expressing so little that it makes you resent the band's apparent emancipation at least a little. vapid farts of incorrigible art

Idk what you mean by expressing so little. Expressing what?

there is no 'what', and that's the issue
not sure how you're approaching music if not as an expressive medium - presumably this album evokes something in you and you haven't rated so highly purely because you like the idea of a bunch of ambitious musicians wasting their creative potential on a bunch of aimless, innocuous noise fritterings

"there is no 'what', and that's the issue"
That's trivially false. This being recorded and released is expression. (I'm not saying it's "expression value" is only that though)
What sought of qualities are lacking in here, so that is does not meet your bar for adequate expression?
"presumably this album evokes something in you and you"
Yeah, I wouldn't praise it otherwise.

@ghandhi that puts the onus on you to pin down what it apparently expresses. not personally convinced by the "creepy atmosphere" argument on the last page, but that at least makes sense as a takeaway
and imposing my own expectations for what it should/shouldn't express would be fatuous and silly. the point is that the album as is fails to suggest anything engaging or meaningful or otherwise to me in its aesthetics or structure or performance or whatever else. it sounds remarkably dull for something this wilfully odd, and since i don't find the circumstances or intent behind its creation particularly compelling either, it lands as an indulgent arthouse flop
and yes, the act of recording and releasing something is technically an expression insofar as we created this and put our name on it and have made it available for public consumption, but that's also a mood point and a pretty piteous bar to set for anything

"and imposing my own expectations for what it should/shouldn't express"
I'm not asking you for your aesthetic preferences. I asked you for what type of qualities in music are indicators that something IS being expressed sufficiently. That could include the qualities that you believe are lacking here.
"that puts the onus on you to pin down what it apparently expresses."
How so? Describing what it is that the album is expressing isn't necessary here, the claim that was made was that it's "expressing very little".
It sounds like this album just doesn't gel with you and bores you. Would it not be more accurate and humble to say that you just don't understand what it is expressing?

do you really want me to go back and edit a few choice imos into those past comments as if the subjectivity of my take on it hasn't been obvious to begin with
i could draw commonalities from other records for aspects that i consider expressive, but that's contrived and a bit naive -- meeting a record on its own terms is always going to be more valuable than your preconceived notions of what it should/shouldn't be doing, even if the two do align sometimes. this could go any number of ways - it could be noisier, more lively, a sparser, sillier, cleaner, harsher, whatever. doesn't matter; i trust my intuitive response enough not to need an artificial set of criteria to support it, and i'd like to think the same would be true for anyone
"Describing what it is that the album is expressing isn't necessary here, the claim that was made was that it's "expressing very little"."
gonna hazard that your view of whatever it is that this album supposedly suggests/articulates/does is going to be much more valuable to discussion than dancing around the colossal moot point that we are talking about oPiNiOnS to begin with

porc anatomy and porc dog teeth should be mutually exclusive
i am furiously scribbling over my mental portrait of porc and replacing it with a hand drawn literal porcupine sacrificing a hunk of ass to a small canine for the sake of hipster noise pollution. gimme that scott pilgrim tie-in, comrade
