Only checked a couple of songs. Is it worth checking? or is it too much blues-oriented? you know I'm not that much into that style

California Breed was a one-off project that happened last year, had Hughes on bass and vocals and Bonzo's son on drums. Also, Andrew Watt, mad guitar prodigy. Album was alright, had some legitimate tunes.

For 2-3 years, Gillan was arguably the best rock singer [2]

"Only checked a couple of songs. Is it worth checking? or is it too much blues-oriented? you know I'm not that much into that style"
It is blues oriented but I think you'll enjoy. I'd suggest checking Medusa. Hughes is brilliant on that album.

I wouldn't say Trapeze were all that blues-oriented. They had more of a soul and funk influence.
"Gillan was way better, I love Plant but he could never do live as well as he was in studio"
Some of Plant's live vocal performances sound better than his studio vocals actually (judging by live albums). Gillan on the other hand, while he excelled at the screams and 'vocal acrobatics', his general singing was always a bit patchy live.

Dunno about that, for example there isn't a single live version of Stairway to Heaven thath I enjoy, he could never sing "to be a rock and not to roll" as he was supposed to. The best live version I've heard from that song is by far Heart's cover on the Kennedy Center, Ann Wilson owned it in there
Same happens with other songs like Achilles or Immigrant Song, they were never that good live

"as he was supposed to"
songs are not supposed to be played or sang as in their studio versions

of course not, Rainbow or Purple played nothing like in studio on their live shows and they sounded amazing
Plant on the other hand was pretty average imo, he had some awesome moments but it was a lil bit dissapointing

Plant still does better on those songs than Gillan does on, say, Highway Star. Just listen to the Made in Japan version for example, he really struggles.

I don't think he "struggles", Highway Star isn't the song with his best vocal performance on the album, gotta give you that but still sounds pretty cool and reaches all the notes imo; on the other songs on the albums he reaches the studio quality and even tops it with songs like Strange Kind of Woman which sounds even better than the original

"I wouldn't say Trapeze were all that blues-oriented. They had more of a soul and funk influence."
They definitely have strong funk influences but on Medusa, they have only two tracks that are clear cut funk. Plus the best songs are very bluesy. Maybe it's a matter of perspective. For example, do you perceive Jury as soul or blues rock?

Manosg, I'd say both but it doesn't have much more in the way of a blues influence than a lot of Deep Purple does so it wouldn't be a problem for SirLord in anyway. After all, all rock music from that era had a blues influence and I've never thought of Trapeze as being notably bluesy.

He definitely struggles to keep up with the and intensity of the song and his vocals are definitely nowhere near the standard of the studio version. There are numerous moments even his prime where he had trouble replicating what he did in the studio and strangely it was often on parts one would consider among the simpler vocal parts. It's not a big issue though, it all adds to the charm of an album such as Made in Japan, which is everything a live rock album should be; raw, energetic etc.

Yeah, his performance may not be flawless but for me it only adds to the raw energy of Made in Japan as well.

" If it's not exciting or dramatic, it doesn't belong on the album...."- Ritchie Blackmore.
In Rock is one of the greatest heavy rock albums ever made.

It's superb yeah, but Machine Head is slightly better for me.

I have it just behind In Rock, but Machine Head is an undoubted classic, and it does contain my favorite Purple tune in Highway Star. The MkII line up, in that 3/4 year period was an amazing band. It's a shame they burnt out so quickly.

Yes it was a shame, they never quite recovered after.
