Review Summary: TA TA TOTALLY DUDE!
Brokencyde - BC13 EP
Bands these days in the ‘core scene have seemingly become more and more generic lately, but every once in a blue moon a unique group comes along to contribute something new to the table. Does this mean that it will have any quality? In this case, no. The BC 13 EP, in essence, is four scene kids’ awful attempt at party music (or “crunkcore”). The album features whiney rapping, cringe-worthy screams, and tinny loops and samples that most likely came from FL studios on Phat J’s laptop. Past the dumb titles, the stupid nicknames of the members, the bad loops, and the ridiculous lyrical themes. Oh and apparently there is some guy named Antz who does the lighting at the live performances and isn’t involved musically, but they list him as a member of the group. What is redeeming about this album? Other than the fact that it has some comedic value for being so terrible, there is really no reason to buy this garbage.
The other problem with this album is that they all sound exactly the same. Featuring minimal lyrical intelligence (The lyrics pretty much all about partying and sex), simple synth melodies, and the same sub-par whiney rapping, and crappy high pitched yelping. A good example of this would probably be “GCOD Intro”. This song features a synth line I could have sworn I have already heard in “BREE BREE!” or “NO GAME!”
Now I’ll do a full run down of the album in the form of a fun track by track of the album.
GCOD Intro:
This song opens up with a synth melody that you will be hearing a lot of on this stupid collection of songs. Se7en comes in and starts scream-rapping mindlessly and terribly about his group. With lines like “BROKENCYDE BITCH AND WE DON’T GIVE A ***KKK!!” This song ends abruptly for some reason which just makes it stupider.
BREE! BREE!:
Wow. Se7en is in the intro of the song doing pig impressions. Phat J comes in and they start screaming “HATE! KILL! LOVE! PAIN!” together. Phat J is a pretty bad screamer too. He has a weak low pitched growl. This song actually has a catchy synth line that comes in when Se7en is doing his pig impressions. This song also features whiny rapping from Mikl that just makes me feel stupid listening too. Se7en even makes this song worse when he says “I NEED A PROJECT CHICK!” in a really weird way which makes us all feel uncomfortable.
2Drunk 2Drive:
This track is about getting drunk and then some chick giving Mikl a blow job. Mikl sounds whinier as ever when he says “Up and down, back and forth, I’m making you my whore”. The beat is exactly the same for 4 minutes save for a short break that lasts about 5 seconds. It’s an interesting beat at first but it drills into your brain and becomes extremely frustrating. It’s a rather boring and repetitive song.
BAND TEE!:
In my opinion, this is the worst song on the entire album. It features an annoying whistling sample for the whole track with Se7en and Phat J screaming randomly over it. Mikl whines and mumbles and he is quite low in the mix thankfully. In the middle of the song I heard someone say “Don’t you wish you were with me right now?... Naked?” It made me feel weird and it was unnecessary. This song just plods along and doesn’t do anything different.
NO GAME:
Why are all these song titles capitalized/ridiculous? It’s annoying. Anyways, the song starts with some guy saying “You’re so pretty! *snort*”. Mikl repeats the line “Man you ain’t got no game.” Like 50 times. Then he talks about how rich and cool he is because of course we all idolize him and want to make crappy crunk music. There is an awful sample of a girl saying “I will ***ing kill you” which makes this song even worse. There is also a pretty bad screaming interlude of Se7en saying something like “I GOT THEM BONES BONES!”
True LOVE:
When the vocals start in this song, it sounds like a bad Sexyback rip off. This song is all about sex and how the guys are turned on by incest or something. The beat is pretty much a rehash of “2Drunk 2Drive”. More of Se7en’s mindless screaming and generic lyrics about intercourse are in this song. This song is slightly more catchy then the other ones but all the grating screaming ruins it.
Kandyland:
Kandyland is a bit of a departure compared to the rest of the BC13 EP. This could probably be considered the album’s ballad. This track actually has a well done beat in the introduction that is quite spacey. The clean vocals that come in are slightly annoying but aren’t too prevalent in the mix to ruin it. Se7en’s screaming is really out of place in this song and he is trying way too hard. The clean vocals are really amateurish and the guy can’t seem to hold a note for over 2 seconds. It’s a shame because it’s a really good instrumental.
Sex Toyz:
With the last track we are back to the regular formula, with whiney rapping and fortunately not as much screaming. On the flip side, however, this song features some of the most immature lyrics on the album: “You give me the heebee jeebies, you make my pee pee hard”. Listening to this song would make most people feel like idiots.
In conclusion, the group tried to make party music that would be played in clubs. Unfortunately, this stuff is just too stupid and grating to be played at a club. It surprises me because these guys know that nearly everyone hates them but they are still making albums and touring. This is an experiment gone wrong and these guys should work on their vocal skills and beef up the beats and samples a little bit so they sound more professional.
