They did piece together pieces from the other songs, that's the point. It's part of what makes it enjoyable.

i think the album goes, in general, from worst to best. I think that a nightmare to remember and a rite of passage are actually pretty bad but i really like the rest

Is this as boring and pretentious as their other stuff? If not, I might actually check it out.

That would depend, I guess. It's their best in a long time, but if you've never liked them before you probably won't start now.

Yep. You were right, Trey. I do not like this one bit. James LaBrie is the problem.

Although " Black Clouds.. " is an improvement from Dream Theaters last endeavor " Systematic Chaos " it still did not reach what I have been wanting from this band since " Octavarium " and that's a solid transition into a fresh sound. I feel that it's noting short of recycled material. The songs are more simplified yes, but nothing new as far as Dream Theater standards go. This band is seeping from the pores with talent and musical ability yet they chose to confine themselves to one genre. It's a shame that they feel the need to put themselves into a box. I understand that some of the songs are continuations of songs from past albums. This is a formula that the band has followed for several years. It has worked well for them, that is until recent years. I feel this album is exactly what you'd expect from Dream Theater, nothing more, nothing less. In one word this album is FORGETTABLE. I hope that they eventually break this mold that they're in. Until then " Black Clouds.. " will be put on the self w/Systematic Chaos collecting dust.

So, you don't like this album because the band didn't go in the direction that you personally wanted them to. So, that explains what this album isn't but shouldn't have anything to do with what the album actually is in reality.
This band is seeping from the pores with talent and musical ability yet they chose to confine themselves to one genre. It's a shame that they feel the need to put themselves into a box.
So, again with this album not being what you wanted and nothing to do with what it actually is. Not every band has to cram a ton of different influences into their sound. If you don't like that it isn't the band's fault and it's also nothing to do with the album.
I feel this album is exactly what you'd expect from Dream Theater, nothing more, nothing less.
... and this is a bad thing? Basically that entire paragraph was bitching about how the band didn't do what you wanted them to do which makes you dislike this album regardless of quality.

trey, if this was the first DT album i ever heard, i would love it.

but after listening to them for years, i can't squeeze any enjoyment out of it, and i think this is what he is getting at. they have stalled and made essentially the same thing for the last batch of albums. it may be consistent, but i'm bored out of my mind!

i'm sad because i want to love it but it's not loving back :-(

This was pretty much my main point. Maybe I'm just different because despite the fact that Pennywise and NoFX have pretty much released the same album over and over again, they're still different songs and they're still everything I love about the bands and that's what this is too. I have a hard time wrapping my head around disliking an album just because it's more of a the same good thing.

well i thought their last three albums have been mediocre so this is probably just the final straw. 3 images and words in a row would rule. three octavarium's is pushing this man's patience.

i'm glad a new DT album is getting mass praise for once, though. even if i can't join in!

Ok, that makes more sense. I only thought the last one was kind of a let down and this one seems to fix those issues, IMO.

I see what you mean here. The whole point of me making the comment was to express my opinion on the album. If I was writing the actual review for the album it would have been different. I simply wanted to give my opinion on the album which is what everyone who has commented has done.

The whole point of the " comment " option is to express ones opinion. WillieFisterbut, you can't find me at fault for doing that.

I understand that. It just seemed to me that you were commenting more on what the album wasn't and what it should have been instead of the actual album itself.

I'm not faulting you for commenting and I'm not trying to say your opinion is wrong. I was just commenting back on how it seemed that you were more worried about what the album could've/should've been instead of what it actually is.

Hm, I meant to review this, but I got stuck with military training through its release date so I didn't bother. I'm away for the next month, but lucky for me we just got WiFi installed, so maybe I'll get it up.
