I think he was starting to struggle anyway but the story is he was driving and heard Strawberry Fields on the radio and was so impressed that he had to stop the car. and then he kept deteriorating as he worked on Smile.
The Beatles had Martin producing, very creative engineers etc at Abbey Road and three incredible songwriters in the band. The Beach Boys were very talented vocalists but Wilson was the driving force behind the songwriting and production of most of their acclaimed stuff. so I think that pressure got to him.

@Danny agreed Surfin USA is awful, but even the weakest song on here is way better. The instrumentation and songwriting is impeccable. Only when you sit down and try playing along will you realize how complicated the music is because it sounds so perfect.
