When listening to this album you can't expect the most complex songwriting in the genre, as far as anyone is concerned this album helped kick start the heavy metal genre to where it is today. So while through a personal lens you might not dig this, if you view this album through a more critical lens while considering it's impact, its all the more impressive.

"When i first listened to this the lack of heavy distortion bothered me"
Heavy isn't about volume, it's about attitude.

Sin After Sin, Painkiller and Stained Class are better than this and Screaming is on par.

"screaming is on par? no fucking way!"
It is. Sure, they're different albums stylistically but Screaming is just as well-written.
Same story with Painkiller except it is top 3 Priest.

You do like your 70's hard rock/metal, aren't you MrSirLord?
Me too, but i've learn to love an album for what is worth.
Imagine we were in a band together and i wanted to play something in the vein of painkiller!

I get you Casavir, Screaming is almost a classic on my book but some songs i just genuinely dislike.

I mean, I do prefer older Priest yeah, but I like their modern sound as well. As an example, I love Screaming and NWOBHM in general. It's just that Painkiller sounds monotonous for me and, even if Halford's high pitched screaming is one of the best things ever, he abuses so much of it on Painkiller that it gets tedious and loses its magic for me
Hell Patrol might be one of my favorite JP songs ever because Rob delivers way more balanced vocals on it

I have to admit, one of the reasons i have 5'd Painkiller is also nostalgia. It was one of the first albums i heard when i was learning to m/. But, still, everything i love about all things metal (campiness included) is 100% displayed on full force in Painkiller. And after all these years, i haven't found yet an opening song that gets me pumped up as much as the t/t.
I also love this album for historic reasons too. It's Priest's comeback. After so many struggles in the 80's, bad albums, they gave us a 100% pure metal album.
