Kage, I love Pelican and Isis, but I freaking really dislike Neurosis. Everybody calls Isis a Neurosis ripoff but I find Isis and Pelican's tonal choices to be much more tasteful than Neurosis'. Neurosis is way into cacophony in individual instruments, which gives weird, almost goofy, riffing in high pitches. Pelican and Isis are more about making the cacophony between instruments and with their harmonizations. I much prefer that sound. Also the production value on a lot of Neurosis sucks since they were "the first," which consequently means they suffer as the genre of instrumental metal is pretty dependent on awesome production and tasteful flares.
Like I said, I'm not familiar with Neurosis at all, only heard a few tracks, but what you're saying makes a lot of sense. To concentrate on one instrument in a genre like this almost takes away the whole idea behind it.
And while production values may be important, Pelican have an amazing live sound that sounds, and also Pelican EP is pretty raw and still sounds awesome. I agree that Pelican and Isis are better than Neurosis from what I've heard. Either way, you make a very good point.

Br3ad, no love for Mare!?! I think they are destined to become one of my favorite bands as soon as they release a new album. I think in this whole group of bands, 5ive's Continuum Research Project, Red Sparrowes and Old Man Gloom all need to be included. All in all, this genre was a really good idea.

Oh no, I think Mare are the fuzz. Now that I think of it, I would probably rate them higher than Pelican.
This is how I'd rate all these bands that are similar:
Isis
Cult of Luna
Neurosis/Jesu
Pelican
Mare
I guess I misunderstood. Mare has those perfect vocals and a capella sections. I need a Mare full length ASAP.
I realized I'm really dominating this genre on Sputnik. No Isis reviews yet though. Mosquito Control maybe?

Go for it. I've done an Isis review and a Cult of Luna one myself.

Pelican rules!! Aurora Borealis is my fav, its a winding and icy adventure. Perfect review, it was short and precise n I'm gonna get Australasia hopefully when a music store near me imports it. This is the only album I have without vocals and its definitely going to be a classic in my collection. Nice work! This Message Edited On 08.17.05

Fast Fingers, you didn't say a word about the bass. It's much more promamant than their other CD's, especially in "Autumn Into Summer".

I have to admit, I've been listening to Australasia more lately.

Is this band ambient? I've heard a lot of things about the heavyness of this band, but i don't want to buy an album of "soundscapes".

Not ambient whatsoever, Sir Toaster. Although you could treat it as though it were.

Btw, thanks for the album, Scruples. This Message Edited On 10.07.05

No problem. But.. it's not ambient. You can treat it like it is, though, but there's no ambience. There's always something exciting going on. Eno is ambience. The Mars Volta have ambience. This has more atmosphere than ambience. This Message Edited On 10.07.05

I think ambience is subjective, but this CD is so atmospheric that you can feel the icyness of it
I don't get what you mean by "you can treat it as if it is," thoughThis Message Edited On 10.07.05

By that, I mean that it's not really ambient, but you can put it on and go about your business and use it like an ambient record. You don't neccessarily have to pay close attention to it to enjoy it, like ambient recordings.

Is it ambient like Sigur Ros's ( ), or like Isis's song "Carry?"

It's not really like ( ). I haven't heard Carry, so I can't compare it to that, but since it's by label mates Isis, I can assume it'd be more like that. This Message Edited On 10.07.05

Oooh yes. They're defiently like the song "Carry". Except maybe a little more uplifting. Well, Pelican shows many emotions on this album.
Pelican sounds alot like Isis. But they're more uplifting on this album. Pelican aren't Isis clones, they have their own style too.
My AIM screenname is Zerobass1123. IM me if you want to hear Pelican.
