I keep asking: Is the album THAT bad?

did YOU actually LISTEN to it?
(spoiler: it's not bad)

Nope, you were right and actually I got impressed, although it's not as the same level as their previous one, for me it's enough to giving it a 4.
And I'm becoming a hardcore placeo fan as the days goes by.

I was a big fan back in the Meds day but kinda fell off a little bit after this album came out
I've had phases on and off and recently has definitely been a phase
band have a lot of cool non-album tracks, actually

truth be told, listening to some of my favorite tracks on this one again, i feel like a big factor on this album's (fan/critical) failure is the production. It sounds more suited for a band like Kings of Leon or something than Placebo - if this was produced a bit more like WYIN or something, with that more rambunctious/gnarly sound it would have probably made a world of difference toward how a lot of these tracks were perceived - at their core some of them are really good

I agree that this is the record that they have jumped the shark, but I find it enjoyable.
It's a fun listen and has some lowkey breath-taking moments. I despise FWIW and Kitty Litter though.
From what I remember, this was Placebo's attempt at getting popular in the USA, complete with hiring California surfer blonde drummer from Evaline. I don't think it went well.
They should not have kicked Steve Hewitt out.
Can't stand LLL (beyond three or four songs), not to mention the Jesus' Son song.
Interesting how both MSP (which was a huge inspiration to Molko, obviously) and Placebo seemed to lose their teeth with age.
Not saying old dudes should sing about teenage angst, but I find it sad how utterly milquetoast and inoffensive their music has become.

i think the turning point for the worse was with Meds, tbh - not because it's a bad album, it's not, but the fact that they were going in to make an even more electronic album than SWG and ended up getting talked into "bringing back the rock" seemed like it just pushed them into territory they shouldn't have been going into with this album. A Placebo that followed the path of songs like Sleeping With Ghosts title track would have been beautiful, and actually made sense in terms of not just singing about teenage angst in your 40s or whatever (a thing that's hardly a guaranteed failure given the success of some of, i don't know, Nine Inch Nails post-Fragile efforts?)

I don't find this album electronic at all...or maybe I'm not listening the keyboards at all....
