Jessica and Ramblin' Man are the only songs I've heard from them, and Jessica is just a perfect song all around, so I figured I should give this a spin. Looks like their 4 first albums at least are worth it

Although Duane is gone and Berry only left his mark on two tracks, this is a fine release by The Allman Brothers.
The album is a great mixture of southern rock, blues, and a touch country. The majority of the album is written by Dickey Betts, with Gregg only writing two tracks.
Everyone familiar with the band knows of the classic tunes Ramblin' Man and Jessica. A real gem on this album though is Southbound. Written by Betts, but sung incredibly well by Gregg Allman, this track has awesome percussion and some excellent guitar playing.
Jelly Jelly is another good track which is more of a bluesy jam. Superb organ playing by Gregg, beautiful piano by the new recruit Chuck Leavell, and Dickey closes it out with a heartfelt solo.
Pony Boy is the only real weak track on the album. It's not terrible, but it's a bit bland and drags on too long.

Lord, I was born a ramblin' man

Got a shit ton of vinyl off my Grandad and this is yet another band I've not heard.
Will spin this tonight.

Did you get At Fillmore East? That album is essential.

Well I got a bunch of vinyls off my Grandad but not that one, no.
He gave me 'This Was' by Jethro Tull, that album any good?
|

Ah, I thought he might have had that as well as it's probably their most famous record.
This Was is good yeah, I have it on vinyl too :]
It's basically a blues album. It features Mick Abrahams who was the original guitarist before Martin Barre joined them for Stand Up. It's not Tull at their best, obviously, but it's definitely an enjoyable album and an interesting insight into their early days.

I love "Jessica" so much, one of my favorite songs ever. It is quite sad that Duane had to die in order for the band to "give the keys" to another very good guitarist and record this. It makes me think that without Duane's death this excellent record (and this song in particular) wouldn't have existed.
Life certainly has a sense of irony.

Brothers and Sisters is one of those albums that I think is excellent front to back. Instrumentation is great as always, and the middle of the album, bridges everything together and "completes" it. Come and Go Blues, Southbound and Jelly Jelly are all great complimentary tracks to the more light hearted Ramblin' Man, and Jessica. Pony Boy is catchy and fun closer to the album, however, I have always thought that Jessica would have been a better closer to the album.
