"enemy is one of my favorites. it’s really when neurosis became neurosis."
Disagree, this album is when Neurosis became Neurosis. Even the Dead Can Dance influence is welcome.

TWIL is underrated in that regard, but yeah I mostly agree. Enemy’s impact on their evolution is perhaps an overstated one tbh (not all progression is ‘equal’ after all). It certainly feels weirdly transitional and yet less groundbreaking a release than this one

Agreed on that description. I love enemy but it's eclipsed by a lot of their work

Nah, this is much more of a transitional record (and therefore more groundbreaking tbh) - Enemy was where they cemented their aesthetic and songwriting MO, not nearly my fav of theirs but quite clearly the point where their sound had arrived in the form they went on to double down on

That’s why I said ‘weirdly’ - to me rarely does any album that feels transitional make it into the higher echelons of a band’s repertoire
This is more groundbreaking, certainly ambitious and yet it avoids many of those pitfalls quite expertly. EOTS is less consistent and barely treads water in terms of evolution, although I suppose you could say with more reliability which elements they wanted to focus on moving forward (that’s fair)

I haven’t heard this for maybe a year though, so idk maybe my memory is hazy
Looks like I’ll pencil this in for the train ride

Funny enough, the transitional nature of this album is exactly why it's my favorite of theirs. I love how it combines the band's future sludge/post-metal sound with the hardcore/post-hardcore influences of their earlier work; that blend gives the album such a unique vibe, and makes it more compelling than any of their other records imo

That’s fair and I agree that it’s at least ‘one of’ their most compelling releases. I think the use of the word “transitional” in the music world seems inherently negative and often associated with “unfocused” or similar, so that’s my hang up. If you take the literal meaning of the word it needn’t be

Yeah this is definitely one of their best
Unbelievable how forward-thinking this sounds even now (that I’ve heard sooooo much more stuff in this general realm). Extraordinary album. T/T is a beast but Sterile / Chronology / Stripped run is incredible
