are they polish? i know the witcher books were a big deal in poland for a long time before the games gave it worldwide appeal

yes they are, but there have been translations for some time now. Sapkowski's work draws strongly from Polish folklore and mythology, which is, fun fact, also where a lot of the monster design in Witcher 3 draws from as well.
