This album is pretty good. The vocals are pretty bad, but the riffs, solos, drumming, and song structures all save this from being really bad.
I think Arch Enemy should remake all the Johan Liiva albums with Angela Gossow. I have the live DVD and they did some songs from the Johan albums and it sounds REALLY good.

HOLY CRAP! This album is awesome! 100 times better than burning bridges.
I'm digging eevery song on the album, the title track is one of the most beautiful instrumentals i've heard, vox stellarum as well.

I personally believe that this is not a special album. It has one thing that sucks= The Songstructure... it's the same in every song, and that bores me, but I think this album has the best AE-song ever..... Stigmata/Sinister Mephisto-medley =)

This album has no magnetism at all. And if this is Arch Enemy's best album, then it's a relatively average band. I've yet to hear something consistent from them.

Definitely not.

I do not concur, Arch Enemy is more of the same and Arsis owns them. You cannot even put Arch Enemy in the same sentence as Dark Tranquillity. Although this is a pretty solid album from a band that went south of good as of late.

By far the best Arch Enemy album. I love the vocals, even though I do love Angela's, I feel Johan's are much better. The album is raw in your face, and extremely brutal. The dark feeling of the riffs is amazing.

ahhhh yes, the better days of Arch Enemy

Angela was the best thing to happen to this band. Commerically at least, and this was my first venture into metal with a hot chick vocalist. But this album is still good, vocally, not so much.

I always preferred 90's arch enemy to their music of the last 12 years-not because i support liiva in the debate as to which is the better vocalist, more to the point regarding the band actually writing much better songs. The two instrumentals could be regarded filler by cynics, but they only add to the overbearing grandiosity that the other songs convey. The album is opened by a monstrous 'Beast of Man' and closed with one of the most beautiful epic metal masterpieces i've ever had the pleasure of hearing ('Bridge of Destiny'). And let's not forget the mammoth of a (perhaps too late) title track, 'Black earth', which is a perfect encapsulation of the Gothenburg metal scene. I believe this is my favourite AE album.

I also prefer Liiva's vocals. Much deeper, and they seem more like a guttural yell than scream. I've always preferred this type of extreme vocals.

disagree, Doomsday Machine is the best thing they've done imo
