This is an alright album. I heard it first earlier this year and thought it was very forgettable, but it's grown on me a bit since then.

Me too. They use some interesting chords and melodies.
Not one of my favorites by any means, but I can listen to their album with a pretty significant level of enjoyment. I'll definately look into anything they do in the future.

great review Dr. Jake, Cog IMO are the best that is going around atm. i've seen them twice now & both times they just blasted the roof off the place. the artistic angle(s) displayed in The New Normal is a testament to the bands unique outlook on music & life in general i think. my all-time favourtie album! In Cog We Trust
News, new cog album out soon, Febuary at this stage. Cant wait, i bet its just as good as this release.
What on earth are you talking about? Cog haven't even mentioned a follow up to this yet. In fact, they're still trying to get enough support so that they have some funds to record a follow up.
Kage, I'm glad Cog's starting to grow on you. I actually prefer the EP's to this now. The New Normal was a big step for Cog, but I don't think it was entirely in the right direction.
/seeing Cog for the 5th time tomorrow night. This Message Edited On 03.02.06This Message Edited On 03.02.06

G Mac, I personally disagree with you with your comment about Cog going in the wrong direction. As much as I love the EPs, I find this album to be a crucial step forward, Cog hasn't compromised their sound at all.
I've just been checking out the re-recording of Moshiach and it's just a new take on it with a higher production quality and some extra production work, it sounds fantastic and when I compare them, it really shows me the progression from the EPs to the LP.

Cog are a great, much like this review.
Favourites off this album are Run, Resonate, My Enemy, Silence is Violence, Anrachy OK, Real Life....Hell the whole album.
What a great debut album, i hadnt even heard of them until about 5 months ago when one of my mates kept going on about Cog. So i borrowed the album off him and its great. I wanna see them live, seeing as they are an Aussie band it wouldnt be that hard.

Cog tour regularly, so you should be able to catch them somewhere. I've seen them 6 out of a possible 7 times in less than a year.

Oh it's a crucial step, I'm not going to deny that, but you seem to be focusing your argument on the production. I have no problems with a band using a higher standard of production, at all. I'm referring to the elements within the song, that make it what it is. If I listen to the Just Visiting EP's, and the The New Normal, I can't help but feel as though the EP's have so much more soul/feeling. This is the opposite of how I feel after listening to TNN, where I feel as though a portion of it was written merely to gain radio attention. My Enemy and Run are good examples of this. Each to his own though, I guess.

This just backs up my point above about us focusing on different aspects of the music, as it's still essentially the same song. To me, the good songwriting is more important than high quality production. This Message Edited On 04.02.06

Good band, and I have to agree that the lyrics aren't the highlight. There's one line that bugs me to no end in Anarachy OK.
"Walking in the park just the other day, I got hit with a rock!"
It just sounds so bad! Other than that, I really like this band.
|
| |
haha i love the lyrics.
but then again im a sucker for glam/hair metal and aren't put off by power metal vocals lol
Great album, gets played the most out of anything I own in the car =)
For me the best songs are Resonate, The Spine and The River Song.
Took me a while to get into Doors and Naming The Elephant, but I still have to say that Doors is close to a masterpiece in terms of the way it's structured and flows

Love this album, Doors has got to be THE best track on here easily. Real Life and The Spine are also awesome. These guys Karnivool and Sleep Parade are Australias best prog bands easily
