Nah Chaos kicks ass, but I'll agree that it doesn't really fit with their much more thrash-y albums before hand.

This album was supposedly one of the driving records of the nu-metal genre back then and was their biggest selling record. It's surprisingly good even if nu-metal is an awful genre.

Korn was bellends with dreads, bagpipes and issues. This was tribal and seemed more real deal to an impressionable teen.

Thing is I stuck it on recently and it still sounds fucking amazing.

Nah, the Korn debut is what inspired this album, guaranteed a Max Cavalera favourite.

The Korn debut is the only nu metal album you really need, it's only just better than demo quality, raw as fuck, and it just has that feel of a band knowing they've invented something new. No one had the twin guitar squalling thing or that rhythm section.

Davis also sings like Trent Reznor on it and never sounded quite the same again after. Three albums later he was obsessed with Robert Snith and it all went horribly tits up though.

The Korn debut is better than Around the Fur which in turn is a bit better than this. End of genre, not a lot else essential.

This and White Pony were the only ones that seemed to offer something different and sound exciting. Everything else was dross.

I prefer the Korn and Amen debuts as they're the most raw/angriest and just the most fun to listen to.

White Pony is polished to within an inch of its life and ditched that Around the Fur groove/guitar sound and marked the start of Deftones becoming less rock and more arty. It's ok but incredibly boring in places. Thing is arty bands are ten a penny but no one had that sexy metal groove they specialised in.

This album is a band hopping on the bandwagon but for the right reasons - they just loved Deftones and Korn at the time and wanted Ross Robinson to help create their own take on the genre. Album is way too long and patchy.

As far as nu-metal goes, Mudvayne's LD 50 is essential, Korn's debut is too (and really their first 4 albums, but you could do with just the s/t).

This is cool for different reasons, it's a tribal, rythmic melting pot of greatness, but imo it has a few too many weak spots. Still a really cool album, but not on the level of Korn s/t and LD 50.

If you want to consider System's first album nu-metal, then add that to the pile as well. Incubus's SCIENCE might fit the bill too, I'll make the case that it's nu-metal enough to count, and either way it's fantastic. Around the Fur is nu-metal outright and might make the cut, White Pony people argue about too much.

Korn debut is one of the few truly good nu metal albums out there. This is probably up there but I don't care for it that much admittedly. The t/t has sick riffs tho

I feel like this album isn't nearly as good as some people say and isn't nearly as bad as the rest say.

Anything associated with Nu Metal will turn eyebrows. Now, that phrase I wasn't even completely aware of when I first heard this album, because it was just a label getting small buzz at the time..and it didn't mean anything. Roots was loud, heavy, weird, and.. it reminded me of Korn, but not quite..I don't really understand the hate the record gets now. If you're too busy listening to their thrash metal; that's fine, and I can understand the change in direction disappointing folks; It's all good, but give it a fair chance.

Is this their best? Hell No, but it's not bad at all. They wanted to do something different and they did, cool.
