panopticon has received the ire of many a purist. this album emerged during what was still an ongoing semi-worldwide sentiment that america could not produce quality black metal. retrospectively - no one thinks this anymore, but that was the sentiment at the time
it took a long ass time for people to give Weakling their props
deafheaven and liturgy will always have people denigrating them because they were the first faces of intentionally integrating "artsy" experimentation into a very traditionalist genre. obviously deafheaven did this to a significantly less degree than liturgy, but if you ask me, imperial triumphant is standing on ground that hunter hendrix cleared for them
